Today I got the most antisemitic hate email and only threatening email of my career. The man included his name and I found an SPLC profile of him so I alerted RCPD in case he follows through on his threats to me and the Rapid City Journal newsroom. He may be from Michigan. 1/x Text of email: Arielle Zionts, Ha ha. Could there be a mor
It's really disgusting+sad that this man and others actually believe in things so hateful. I feel bad for him that he holds these beliefs in his heart. Other Jewish journalists get offensive+threatening messages. So do journalists who are women, Muslim, people of color, etc. 2/x
To clarify I asked RCPD to assess if he will follow through on his threat in case we need protection. That's my main concern. I think he could be charged with this federal law related to threatening communications: law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18….

Now some analysis. This email is filled with classic antisemitic tropes about Jews being rich and controlling the government+media. The part about Jews making up COVID-19 to instill fear and tyranny is like Jews being blamed for The Black Death (this inspired some pogroms). 5/x
Fact check: The above statements are obviously false! Also he said I have a very Jewish name. My first name is Hebrew+Jewish but Zionts is not and has nothing do w/ Zion or Zionism. It's transliterated from "Zając," a very common name for Polish people of all backgrounds.

6/x
Fact check: My newsroom is not "full of Jews" given that SD is the least Jewish state in the country. The newsroom is generally quite empty due to the pandemic and our small staff size. Also I do not and have never belonged to a "Jew resort," guess I wasn't invited.

7/x
Some people harass and threaten journalists just for being journalists but it's even worse for journalists who are women or belong to marginalized+minority groups: People of color, Jews Muslims, LGBTQ people, etc.

8/x
I spoke w/ an FBI dispatcher from MN (which oversees SD) who connected me to a national dispatcher for this specific kind of issue. They asked a lot of questions, took it seriously and even called back with more information.

9/x
Note that the threats in the email are against me and my newsroom but ultimately his threat and goal is to see all Jews killed.

10/x
Called back with more questions*
The FBI is fast ... the national center contacted the Rapid City office and an agent from there just called me. I'll be meeting with him tomorrow.

11/x
As others have said, if politicians and others want to help they can speak out against conspiracy theories which often blame Jews and other minorities. Some of those conspiracy believers will then take action against minorities, politicians or the general public.

Today "Kelly" emailed to tell me "the only reason you have not seen any evidence of election fraud is because you are deaf, dumb, and blind."

Both an inaccurate and ableist insult!
My response:
My response in text: OK so you have information about planned, widespread fraud that Trump's Department of Justice and the conservative-majority Supreme Court that has three Trump appointees doesn't have? 1/3

Gov Noem:

F: Duck hunting in Arkansas with state's lieutenant governor.
S: Meeting w/ FL opioid awareness activist on plane in SD.
S: In DC for award from Mom's For America.
M: In DC to meet w/ Trump instead of voting for him in Pierre.
T: In DC to meet with First Lady.

Spokesman Ian Fury did not explain what Noem would be talking to the President and First Lady about. He said the state plane – which can only be used for official state business – was NOT used in any of Noem's weekend travel.

2/x
Fury did not respond when asked if Noem believes Biden won in a fair and free election without widespread voter fraud or a rigged election. Noem had not acknowledged Biden’s victory as of last Tuesday, Fury posted on Twitter.

One of my family’s dogs died this morning. Sidney was a rescued nearly 11-year-old English Bulldog. He had a wonderful day outside yesterday and experienced a camp fire for his first time.
He went on a walk this morning and our other dog came to kiss him before he had a seizure or stroke before quickly dying in my dad’s arms.

Here's the full clip where @govkristinoem provides no evidence of purposeful voter fraud (there have been errors that have been corrected). 1/x

.@GStephanopoulos points out that the Gore recount was about one very close state while Trump is behind in larger margins in multiple states, that even with recounts it won't make a difference. He said he's spoken w/ multiple Republican election leaders who've seen no fraud. 2/x
If there was widespread voter fraud I think election leaders and reporters would have noticed it. That would be a great and important scoop for a reporter. Noem points to machine mistakes, clerical issues, dead people voting ... issues that were caught and corrected. 3/x

SD high school students holding Trump flags posed with a student wearing black face. Some students wrote racist comments on the photos while others condoned the black face and comments.
Is justice in this case to criminally charge or suspend the students?

Or is justice having them do serious education about racism, apologize and do some sort of volunteer work.

Which option will create change now+hopefully in the future?
Our country likes to rely on the criminal justice system for many problems. There are other options like education and restorative justice.

What would restorative justice look like in this case+others where students say or do things that are racist, antisemitic, sexist, etc.?
