How to think about INVESTMENT vs. SPECULATION.

- A thread
The key difference is "underlying value".
The key difference is "underlying value".
The key difference is "underlying value".
The key difference is "underlying value".

Let me explain.
Moderna is a pioneer in mRNA technology.

mRNA will be the biggest medical innovation of the next few years.

Watch this to understand mRNA technology.

Moderna used mRNA to create a highly effective COVID vaccine.

That vaccine at $25 per dose will add at least $25billion to their bottom line.

But that's not the only reason we invested.
The underlying value in Moderna is the tech.

mRNA will eventually be used to create vaccines for everything from cancer to HIV.

So we are buying future cashflow in Moderna not just COVID cashflow.
So even if its COVID vaccine fails, the mRNA tech in Moderna will continue to provide value for investors in the future.
Speculation on the flip side focuses on prices.

You can buy a horrible company if you think its stock price will go up.

Or you can buy Dollar/GBP pair in forex if you think one price will go up.

The difference is - YOU'RE NOT BUYING THE UNDERLYING VALUE. You're speculating.
In my view, most people don't have the:

1. Expertise
2. Time.
3. Patience

To make stock purchase decisions like this.

In that case, your best bet is to place your funds with a firm like (overwood.ng) that does this for a living.

I finally bought a significant amount of $BTC for my personal portfolio yesterday.

Why?

I studied some stuff that suggests there may be something there.

I have expressed a lot of skepticism about it so I need to let you know that my skepticism has thawed a bit.

Caveat...

👇
Caveat.

Crypto should still not be your primary investment vehicle cos of its volatility. But it can be a small part of a well-balanced portfolio.

IMO, it's dangerous to put money you're not prepared to lose in crypto. But it's a good instrument for your most aggressive bucket.

We can't dismiss an idea because of the toxicity of some of its proponents.

Our communities can't thrive unless we empower women so we must all be feminists.

The belligerent voices don't own the concept: they are just louder.

We must elevate/empower women regardless.
People who are hurting often bleed on those who didn't hurt them.

We must tend the wound regardless.
The research is clear:

Empowered men buy more external goods for validation and self-aggrandization.

Empowered women buy more food, education, and community-building items.

ONE THING per year.

- A thread
People often ask me:

"What has been the most impactful habit or process in your life?"

For me:

It's been clarity of purpose. Knowing the ONE THING I really want and devoting a significant amount of time to it exclusively.
A new year is on the horizon and many people will soon start making new year resolutions to improve several aspects of their lives.

All my new resolutions typically fail before the end of January, and I will bet yours probably fail in January too.

May I suggest another way?

Sent this to one of my former teachers today.

Hello Professor X,

I remembered you today and thought I should write to say, "Thank You."

You were always a light during my darkest days at Mizzou and have always been my reference point for the kindness and generosity of Americans
I remember you for good and have always remembered you for good. I have traveled the world and done many things since leaving Mizzou but I am still immensely grateful for your kindness to me at Mizzou.

Thank you for everything.

Regards,

Tayo
It's important to have an older, more accomplished person who will speak for you in rooms to which you're not invited.

Professor X was that person for me.

I am still immensely grateful 13 years later.

Nothing works until you work hard.

Hard work works.

- A thread
I am totally mystified when I talk to young people about working hard and they reply that it's about working SMART, not working HARD.

I fundamentally disagree.

You can work hard strategically but hard work is not negotiable.
I have been lucky and blessed but I can also say that I have also worked harder than many of the people I grew up with.

I agree that you can work really hard at a bad business model and make no progress but I don't believe it is possible to make any progress without hard work.

Every autocrat in the world now has a good excuse, "After all, elections in the US are rigged too."

All based on false premises and a grown man's infantile inability to accept defeat.

That's why I can never respect anyone who thinks highly of this narcissistic orange thing.
Trump reveals more about people than anything else I know.

If you're ok with him, then you think racism, narcissism, intellectual paucity, childish name-calling, racism, racism, and more racism is ok.

It's impossible to defend that.
Autocrats cite him, "Fake News."

Nazis and "Proud Boys" fight for him.

Decent people voted him out and danced on the street after he lost.

But this man-child won't go before breaking all the dishes in the kitchen and questioning the very essence of democracy.

What a mess!
