In celebration of the #ArabicLanguageDay here are 10 facts about Arabic.
Fact 1: Arabic has three different variants which are used in all Arabic-speaking countries. They are: Classical, Colloquial or Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).
Fact 2: Arabic is spoken by over 420 million people in the Arab world, and is the liturgical language of 1.8 billion Muslims. It is the sixth most spoken language in the world.
Fact 3: Arabic is a Bidirectional Language, that means it’s written and read from Right-to-Left.
Fact 4: Numeric systems in Arabic are divided into two kinds of shapes:
- Arabic Shapes (Western Arabic), which are commonly used worldwide;
- Hindu Shapes (Eastern Arabic), which are more commonly used among Arabs.
Fact 5: Arabic is a rich language. For in Arabic, there are different stages of friendship, and each stage denotes a noun.
Fact 6: Arabic has a root system, which makes it supremely logical. Every noun, adjective, and verb is built on a system of 3 key letters, with changes in consonants and vowels. The beauty of it is that it conveys a depth of both meaning and emotion unmatched by many languages.
Fact 7: Arabic has unique sound that does not exist in any other languages (Ḍād, ض), fourteenth letter of Abjad. It's very unusual to speakers of European languages, can be described as a very strongly pronounced “D”. For this reason, Arabic is called “the language of the Ḍād”.
Fact 8: Arabic has no capital letters. Quotation marks are used for emphasis instead.
Fact 9: The oldest form of Arabic literature is poetry, and Arabs are crazy about poetry.
Fact 10: Old Arabic was spoken around approximately 3,000 years ago. Nabataean Arabic was around approximately 2,500 years ago. Classical Arabic is around approximately 1,500 years old.
