Update on this story @VICENews:

I’m told 3 of the 4 kids who described being heavily medicated while in US government custody have been moved out of the Houston hospital where they were held. Attorneys are actively working to get the last one out.

vice.com/en/article/93w…
Here's how these kids — who arrived at the border alone, seeking safety in the US — described this hospital.

This is a 16-year-old who says he was forcibly injected five times and placed in physical restraints.

Full court docs here: embed.documentcloud.org/documents/2042…
This 15-year-old girl said she preferred the freezing-cold Border Patrol “hielera” holding cell where she was first detained after crossing the border.
Attorney describes a 15-year-old who was on so many drugs he could barely talk or maintain eye contact. The boy said he'd been asking for "voluntary departure" — to be sent back to his native country — for seven months.
It's not just this one hospital in Texas. Conditions are super grim for children who are detained at the border.

This is an 8-year-old boy describing a Border Patrol cell in Weslaco, Texas last month.
The Trump admin flouts rules that require kids to be transferred out of Border Patrol custody within 72 hours. The stays are supposed to be "safe and short."

Detention times for children got longer over the last 4 years.

For awhile the Trump admin stopped taking kids who arrived at the border alone, claiming it was a public health risk.

Per @Haleaziz, DHS carried out deportations of children 13,000+ times from March to November.

The rules on "unaccompanied minors" — kids who arrive at the border alone —are part of the Flores settlement.

The Justice Department has been fighting Flores in court, but federal judge keeps ordering them to comply.

The issue of immigrant kids in jail-like "secure" facilities and "residential treatment centers" has spawned a separate lawsuit from Flores. I write about one teen's kafkaesque nightmare with this system in 2018:

vice.com/en/article/9k8…
Allegations of forced injections of immigrant youth in US custody go back to 2018, first reported by @aurabogado @SFMattSmith @reveal:

“Two staff grabbed me, and the doctor gave me the injection despite my objection and left me there on the bed.”

revealnews.org/blog/immigrant…
“Even if ORR wanted to, they couldn't go online and tell you, ‘This many kids have been forcibly injected over the last six months.’ They just don't have the data; I find it horrifying. It's just a black box.”

Just published @VICENews:

The U.S. decided to drop narco-corruption charges against Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda after AMLO threatened to kick the DEA out of Mexico.

vice.com/en/article/xgz… w/ @emilytgreen @VICENews
Here's what one U.S. law enforcement official had to say about the charges against Cienfuegos getting dropped:

“I hope the DOJ gets it together. We can’t do business like this. We’re embarrassed. We’re ashamed.”

vice.com/en/article/xgz…
“I expect there to be a fall guy somewhere in the chain that was involved with this. It will be somebody who had no influence and no involvement. It will be someone who makes all the higher-ups feel better.”

The court hearing for Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda starts in about 20 minutes in Brooklyn.

Will tweet updates on this thread, so stay tuned.

Here's our story yesterday @VICENews on narco-corruption charges being suddenly dropped by US prosecutor…

vice.com/en/article/4ad…
Here's my coverage of the Cienfuegos news yesterday, including excerpts from court docs where prosecutors say the US "determined that sensitive and important foreign policy considerations outweigh the government’s interest in pursuing the prosecution…"

To recap: The US spent years secretly investigating a top Mexican general known as "The Godfather," made a surprise arrest that they didn't even tell AMLO about, then, a month later, handed him back to Mexico on assurances he would be prosecuted there. Completely unprecedented.

Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda update:

Mexico's ex-top military general charged w/ narco-corruption is due back in court tomorrow in Brooklyn.

Judge Carol Bagley Amon is skeptical of prosecutors asking to keep parts of case under seal, directs acting US Attorney to come explain…
Many high-level Mexican drug cases have been shrouded in secrecy in US federal courts. Tons of stuff in El Chapo's case was kept under seal. So it's interesting to see Judge Bagley Amon pushing back on gov't efforts at secrecy very early w/ Cienfuegos.
No indication what prosecutors are seeking to keep under seal w/ Cienfuegos. The judge's order refers to docket entries 20 and 21, which aren't listed publicly on pacer…

Today's hearing before Judge Cogan starts in about 15 minutes. Will be tweeting live updates to this thread, stay tuned here for updates as things get underway.…
Here's the "status update" for today's hearing, jointly filed by federal prosecutors and GGL's attorney.

On the agenda:

-Arraignment on new indictment
-Evidence that the gov has been handing over
-Trial date may be set, gov says will last 2-3 months

Already problems — lots of people on this conference call, including someone who has a Spanish-language news broadcast blasting. Court interpreter saying she can't hear anything over the background noise. Some people have not figured out how to "mute" yet during the pandemic.
