How it started vs how it's going - for #SugarBeet growers
1/8
In 2016, UK farm minister and Conservative MP George Eustice said farmers would be better off if the UK left the EU. Mr Eustice has since been promoted to @DefraGovUK secretary
But @NFUSugar chairman @Mhssly says allowing so much raw sugar into the country tariff-free is 'devastating' for the UK's 3,000+ sugar beet growers & could lead to the permanent decline of UK sugar beet industry.
The sole processor of the UK #SugarBeet crop is @BritishSugar, which processes about 8m tonnes of sugar beet into some 1.4m tonnes of sugar each year – supporting thousands of jobs.
LATEST: Basic Payments will be reduced by the following percentages in 2021 for farmers in England, @DefraGovUK has confirmed. #NFU20#NFU2020 (thread 1/10)
For example, for a claim worth £40,000, a 5% reduction would be applied to the first £30,000 and a 10% reduction would be applied to the next £10,000. (thread 2/10)
The reduction percentages will be increased over time until the final payments are made for the 2027 scheme year. (thread 3/10)
LATEST: @DefraGovUK secretary George Eustice will use @NFUtweets conference to unveil details of government's Environmental Land Management (ELM) scheme. #NFU20#nfu2020 (thread 1/8)
ELM scheme will replace direct payments to farmers, which will be phased out from 2021. It will reward farmers who undertake environmental measures on their land. #NFU20#nfu2020 (thread 2/8)
Proposals unveiled by @DefraGovUK secretary George Eustice include three ‘tiers’ of entry to the ELM scheme, "enabling anyone from any farm or land type to participate at the right level". (thread 3/8) #NFU20#nfu2020
