Hey @maitlis, great to see you bigging up a @Deliveroo courier but thought you might like to know a few facts about what conditions these key workers operate under after plugging their exploitative employer to your 418.9k followers (Thread)
1)Couriers have provided a vital service throughout the pandemic delivering food to the vulnerable, the sick and the public to keep them safe. However couriers' employers have done very little to look after them
2)@Deliveroo failed to provide sufficient financial & physical protection for couriers which not only endangers the lives of their workforce but also the thousands of people they deliver to daily. They did the bare minimum to protect low paid workforce! independent.co.uk/news/business/…
3)The furlough scheme meant many restaurants closed their doors and couriers saw wages plummet to single figures despite working 10+ hour days. On top of this @Deliveroo have flooded cities with extra couriers further driving down earnings
4)As if this drop of earnings wasnt enough, the @IWGB_CLB has seen a rise in unfounded terminations of these key workers-many are BAME migrant workers like Khalid Kalil in Sheffield. They are given no chance to appeal decision & the ramifications are huge inews.co.uk/news/uk/delive…
5)For this reason the @IWGB_CLB along with @UPHD_IWGB have launched the #ClappedAndScrapped campaign to fight for a fair process around terminations for app based workers. A fair process around being fired is the very least these key workers deserve!
6) @IanByrneMP has tabled an EDM calling for companies to implement a fair process around dismissals including a hearing prior to dismissal, and the right to appeal a dismissal with union representation. This has gained the support of 67 MPs
7)Couriers all over the country are organising, unionising and taking action to force fair treatment. The pandemic has shown these workers, who have been treated as disposable for so long, are absolutely essential & must be treated that way in future
8) Last week @NadiaWhittomeMP threw her support behind what the couriers branch of the @IWGBunion are trying to achieve and we are seeing momentum and support growing daily!
9) It is great to see you showing gratitude to a courier who has been subjected to awful conditions, but the best way to support is by encouraging couriers to unionise, backing the #ClappedAndScrapped campaign and pledging to support action in 2021 ✊
