A no deal exit is now inevitable it appears
Maybe mini-deals will be agreed to smooth things over?
Although not my choice I think trading with the EU on WTO terms is the logical outcome of Brexit
Will make clear whether the single market was a benefit or not to the UK economy 1/
I wonder what Margaret Thatcher would think about that, she & Arthur Cockfield did so much to establish the single market across the EU
It allowed us to focus on our strengths, services
And 60% of our economy is services, very odd how little that has been discussed versus fish
2/
I do not believe WTO trade will be a disaster but this is also a bad start to Brexit
COVID ⬆️ + 10 days left + Christmas holidays
I always thought Brexit could be a success but required leadership, competence, preparation & vision for future
Was missing in 2016 & still missing
3/
But since 2016 been struck by;
- few Brexiteers making a detailed argument for what happens next, how will we use new freedoms? shape of the economy?
- a lack of ambition (last minute roll over deals sold as a success!)
- some Brexiteers I respect have changed their minds
4/
- but also clear too many people in UK still do not understand the EU
Perhaps we need a clean break to understand what we will miss (or not)?
But there are many important elements to the relationship other than trade e.g. security, and we will need to do deals in these areas
5/
I knew the referendum had to be respected from day 1 but I have had no respect for how Brexit has been carried out since 2016
Had I not already resigned the Conservative party, a no deal exit would have been another trigger to go
As a half-German, economic liberal who believes
6/
in the 4 freedoms of the single market + the advantages of close co-operation with Europe on a range of issues
I still think an EFTA relationship was a good compromise
I also fear the 'daily mail' style attacks on the EU
It will also make my life & many others more complicated
7/
The role of government should not be to narrow horizons & citizens options
Britain has many strengths & in some areas we will thrive regardless
But a stable, competent, visionary government would help
We all need Britain to succeed, the question is how?

Construction hours update
Earlier this year the government allowed construction sites to work earlier and later than the normal hours to keep on schedule during COVID
A number of sites locally applied for this exemption, none of which closed during the first lockdown. 1/
But the government made an exception where the applications were in dense residential areas
But TH Council never mentions that exception and allowed every application even when local residents & I objected
So I wrote to Lord Greenhalgh, the Minister who announced the change
2/
asking him to remind the Council that exemptions were allowed, that the Council did not have to grant every application for extended hours
His response is below
It makes clear that where extending construction hours has a significant impact on health that these applications 3/
Tower Hamlets Council are proposing to change the name of Canary Wharf ward to Millwall ward
What do you think it should be called? see poll
I suggest Millwall & Canary Wharf as a compromise
Like Blackwall & Cubitt Town, Spitalfields & Banglatown etc talk.towerhamlets.gov.uk/wardnames
1/
The ward covers this area including the Canary Wharf estate + Canary Wharf Jubilee, Elizabeth, DLR stns
Few assets in the ward called Millwall;
Millwall fire station, Millwall Dock Rd, St Lukes Millwall
Docks called Millwall on edges of ward
But does NOT include Millwall Park 2/
Millwall used to be the name used for a larger ward pre-2014 & historically as well
But for some people Millwall = Millwall Football Club which moved to s London some time ago
But when I write to government minister etc easier to say Canary Wharf
Our Ideas Store is called CW! 3/
These changes include some permanent road closures, some timed road closures controlled by cameras (you get a ticket if you drive into the area at certain times unless you have a resident permit), some one-way streets + some other changes on pavements etc
2/
Canary Wharf College Glenworth has now been added to the map (although I am not convinced to the design) but a local resident submitted some excellent comments as regards the roads outside CWC Glenworth

73% of new money paid by developers for new infrastructure in Tower Hamlets is earned in the Isle of Dogs & South Poplar area
BUT
only 34% of that money is planned to be spent in this area even though the GLAs consultants were clear that 100% had to be spent in this area 1/
This relates to Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) paid by developers to the Council to pay for new infrastructure e.g. GP surgeries, schools, bridges etc
It replaced s106 from April 2015, but buildings approved before April 2015 pay s106 cash & afterward pay CIL 2/
So for example IoD & S Poplar (area below E East India Dock road) has earn't £56.7 million in CIL, £77.8 million across TH up to May 2020
But in the 1st pic is my attempt to calculate how much CIL has been budgeted to be spent here, £12 million in Cabinet papers versus £22.8 m 3/
Liveable Streets Bow consultation outcome report in next weeks Cabinet agenda
Some big changes which those who responded to the consultation support
But note only 17% of residents cycle in TH (in 2019)
60% of consultation respondents report they cycle democracy.towerhamlets.gov.uk/ieListDocument… 1/
2011 census for Bow East & West wards (a bigger area) says
5,357 cars/vans in 2011 v 1,856 consultation respondents from drivers
1,419 cycle to work in 2011 v 2,281 cyclists who responded to the survey
In 2011 census households with a car
Bow East 44%
Bow West 50% 2/
Although people who cycle in Bow in 2011 was proportionally higher then other wards so the 17% number I quote for the whole of TH maybe understatement but in 2011 9% to 11% of Bow residents cycled to work
This area has a very low Public Transport Accessibility Level of 2 3/
I made a mistake, I asked you to sign a petition, which 615 of you signed, thanks, even though you were described last night by a Labour Cllr as being possibly from Timbuktu or Honolulu!
It asked to consider the Committee system as an option to explore in any future referendum 1/
In the vote last night lots of Labour Councillors said in their comments while voting
"For the people to decide 2021"
What they meant was for the people to decide from only 2 options which the Labour party had picked for them & where some fundamental issues remain unresolved
2/
Attempts to do this properly where ignored last night
That more people, 615 had signed the petition to consider the Committee system, then had signed the Labour group petition 504 people, was why a Labour Cllr had to attack the signatories as not local
