In August, @navalny was poisoned by an FSB team with Novichok. Last week, @navalny spoke to one of the FSB officers involved in the operation... for 48 minutes.
Full transcript (in Russian + English), analysis, and everything else you need to know: bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
Navalny called Konstantin Kudryavtsev, a military chemist with the FSB who flew to Omsk after the poisoning attempt. He introduced himself as the fictional "Maxim Ustinov", an "aide to [Russian security council head] Patrushev", taking a report on the failed operation.
In order to get Kudryavtsev to pick up the phone, Navalny used a spoofing app that made his number appear to be that of an FSB landline that was frequently called throughout the operation by many members of the team.
The most insane part -- Kudryavtsev didn't recognize Navalny's voice (other people Navalny called did recognize him)
Navalny, speaking as "Maxim Ustinov", asked Kudryavtsev about various aspects of the operation throughout the call -- how do you asses your colleagues' competency? why did the operation fail? how would you do the operation differently? how was the poison applied?
("Very well" / "The paramedics and pilot" / "It's not for me to say" / "On the crotch of the underwear")
Kudryavtsev was kind enough to volunteer information about his team, and even corrected Navalny on a slip-up when he asked about how Oleg Tayakin (who was in Moscow) -- instead of Ivan Osipov (who was in Tomsk) -- provided leadership for the operation.
This call gave us some new details we had no idea about. Kudryavtsev named a local FSB chief named Mikhail. We figured out this is Mikhail Evdokimov, and is likely the man standing on the right in this photo at the Omsk hospital where Navalny was sent.
The call is required listening. We put the entire transcript in the original Russian and translated into English in our article, along with embedded videos of the call with both English and Russian subtitles.

A joint investigation between Bellingcat and The Insider, in cooperation with Der Spiegel and CNN, has discovered voluminous telecom and travel data that implicates Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) in the poisoning of Alexey Navalny. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
The August 2020 poisoning in the Siberian city of Tomsk appears to have happened after years of surveillance, which began in 2017 shortly after Navalny first announced his intention to run for president of Russia.
Data shows that operatives from a clandestine FSB unit, specialized in working with poisonous substances, shadowed Navalny during his trips across Russia in 2017, 2019 and 2020, traveling alongside him on more than 30 overlapping flights to the same destinations.

Covid-19 relief schemes in many countries have supported furloughed workers and helped keep businesses afloat in recent months.

But analysis by the Bellingcat Tech Team has found indications of geographic inequities in some programs. bellingcat.com/news/2020/12/0…
We looked at schemes in the US, France and the United Kingdom, burrowing into sector-specific data and creating interactive maps for our readers to explore.
The US data appeared to suggest that the Payment Protection Program (PPP), which offered loans to small and medium sized business, could have exacerbated existing inequalities.

The @Frontex saga continues.

Our partners @derspiegel reveal Frontex boss Leggeri has been deceptive about his agency’s knowledge of illegal push-backs of asylum seekers.

spiegel.de/politik/auslan…
Leggeri has said that Frontex’s knowledge about push-backs is based on media accusations, and that Frontex has no evidence of them happening.

However, documents unearthed by @derspiegel show otherwise.
At least one push-back was recorded in detail: on April 19 a Frontex plane observed the Greek Coast Guard tow a dinghy full of people to the Greek-Turkish sea border.

The dinghy was then abandoned. It had no means of propulsion and was left adrift in the middle of the sea.

As the internal conflict between Ethiopia's government and #Tigray forces continues, accusations have been made that Emirati armed #drones are launching attacks from a base in nearby Eritrea. Does that claim hold true? We checked with @planetlabs imagery: bellingcat.com/news/rest-of-w…
@planetlabs Drones are not new to this part of the world. In fact, since 2015, Chinese-made drones have been spotted on satellite images of the Assab Air Base in Eritrea. The facility is used by the UAE for its military campaign in #Yemen. Image
@planetlabs New satellite imagery shows an Emirati Wing Loong II drone at the Assab base. But Ethiopia has its own jet fighters, and open-source information confirms their use. As the UAE has no bone to pick with either side, the prospect of its drones in the conflict zone looks unlikely. Image

A new online influence operation that seeks to counter West Papua’s independence movement appears to have emerged on prominent social media sites, as @BenDoBrown reports. bellingcat.com/news/2020/11/1…
@BenDoBrown The discovery comes roughly one year after a similar network of fake accounts was uncovered by Bellingcat.
@BenDoBrown Although the new web of between 100 and 200 accounts has made little impact thus far, it appears to stretch across Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Instagram.
