1. American Crossroads had ads removed by Facebook because of a brutally dishonest attack on Warnock.

The ads claimed that Warnock said "God Damn America" as an expression of his own views.

He was quoting someone else

One day later, Facebook has approved ads w/the SAME CLAIM
2. What is the point of enforcing a rule and taking down ads if you can just republish an ad with the exact same claim the next day?

This ad has been debunked by Facebook fact-checking partner

Facebook doesn't seem to be taking their own rules very seriously
3. This is the second time in two days that American Crossroads has responded to this ad getting taken down by publishing an ad with an identical claim.

Both times the ad was approved by Facebook.

Here is my thread from Monday.

4. I will ask Facebook what's up and let you know if I hear back.

1. I know it's Christmas Eve but people should understand what's happening with Facebook ads and the Georgia Senate runoffs.

These elections will determine the trajectory of American politics for the next two years.

Facebook's conduct is indefensible

Follow along if interested
2. The story starts on December 17, after Facebook begins allowing political ads in Georgia.

American Crossroads, a Super PAC run by Karl Rove and financed by Mitch McConnell, starts running a brutally dishonest ad against Raphael Warnock
3. The American Crossroads ad tells Georgia voters on Facebook that Warnock said "God Damn America."

As if he was expressing his own views. But he wasn't. He was quoting Jerimiah Wright in a speech he delivered on 7/11/13.

We tracked down the full quote

1. There are a whole bunch of corporations making last minute donations to GOP candidates to Georgia.

They want to keep Mitch McConnell in charge of the Senate.

I'm going to list the companies in this thread.

Follow along if interested.
2. @Wendys (5K to Perdue, 12/18)

@TDBank_US (5K to Perdue 12/18)

@PwC (PriceWaterhouseCoopers) (5K to Perdue 12/18)

@LillyPad (Eli Lilly) (5K to Perdue 12/18)

@HomeDepot (5K to Perdue 12/17)
3. Loeffler has received fewer large corporate PAC contributions.

@CSX (5K to Loeffler, 12/17)

But this is only two days of data (12/17 and 12/18).

We'll get daily reports but won't find out anything about 12/3 to 12/17 until 12/24.

It makes no sense but that's how it works

UPDATE: On Thursday, I flagged an ad on Facebook by American Crossroads that contained a blatantly false attack on Warnock.

It was debunked by a Facebook fact-checking partner and removed.

But now, American Crossroads has republished THE EXACT SAME AD
2. I've asked Facebook how this is possible.

It's bad enough that the company is not enforcing it's own rules.

But after someone else does its work for them, it's allowing the advertiser to just republish the same lie.

WTF

3. It's amazing that a company worth hundreds of billions of dollars that employs tens of thousands of people can be so casual about this.

Control of the Senate is at stake.

Somehow a dude on his couch (me) is able to do a better job staying on top of it

1. A bill that would make it more difficult for companies to import products made with slave labor in the Xinjiang region of China passed the House by a vote of 406-3.

Now it looks likely to die in the Senate.

Why?

Successful corporate lobbying.

popular.info/p/corporate-lo…
2. Companies like @Apple and @Nike are lobbying on the bill. But they claim not to oppose it.

Industry groups are less circumspect.

The Chamber of Commerce and The American Apparel & Footwear Association both publicly oppose the bill

popular.info/p/corporate-lo…
3. The bill would require companies to prove that products from the region "were not produced wholly or in part by convict labor, forced labor, or indentured labor" before importing them to the U.S.

This is very difficult

And that's the point

1. If, in fact, Congress has reached a deal for another COVID relief package that is good news because people are hurting and need help.

But let's not overlook that the legislative process is completely dysfunctional and the American people deserve better
2. The public needs an opportunity to LEARN about major legislation and MAKE THEIR VIEWS KNOWN.

Instead, we get legislation that is produced at the last possible moment and must pass immediately to avoid a government shutdown.

It's a recipe for poor decisions and corruption
3. Does the legislation include the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act?

Does it extend the eviction moratorium?

Does it provide guard rails to prevent the abuse of PPP funds?

Nothing has been made public yet that I can tell.

UPDATE: Two days ago, I flagged how Karl Rove's Super PAC, American Crossroads, was using Facebook to run an outrageously dishonest attack on Raphael Warnock.

It has finally been removed.
2. I did not create Facebook's ad policy. Facebook created its ad policy. But it enforced the policy only after:

-- I fact checked the ad

-- I altered one of Facebook's fact checkers

-- The fact checker confirmed it was misleading

-- I noted it still was running on Facebook Image
