Living in space can get lonely. That’s why some astronauts spend their limited free time making contact with amateur radio operators around the world.

Astronaut Doug Wheelock was just a few weeks into his mission at the space station when feelings of isolation began to set in.

Then, he turned on the station’s radio — just to see if anyone was listening.

The first amateur radio transmission from space dates to 1983, when astronaut Owen Garriott took to the airwaves.

On Wednesday, March 4, passengers awoke to find a letter from the cruise line notifying them that the CDC was investigating “a small cluster” of COVID-19 cases in Northern California connected to a Grand Princess cruise to Mexico a couple of weeks earlier.

Some of the guests from that trip were still on board — back-to-backers, they were called — along with many crew members. There was no indication that anyone onboard had it. Soon came more unsettling news.

California was reporting what was believed at the time to be its first COVID-19 death.

It was “an elderly adult with underlying health conditions” from Placer County, and he had been on the Grand Princess trip to Mexico.

As COVID spreads faster than ever in L.A. County, it has reached malls, too. The vast majority of outbreaks reported at shopping malls during the pandemic were reported in the past four weeks, according to a Times analysis of county data. latimes.com/california/sto…
At the Northridge Fashion Center, 12 J.C. Penney employees recently tested positive for the coronavirus, as did 10 at Kohl’s in the South Bay Galleria in Redondo Beach and 24 at the Best Buy in the West Hollywood Gateway retail center, which prompted a 6-day closure of the store.
New outbreaks have also been reported at Vans in the Burbank Town Center, Zara at the Glendale Galleria and Forever 21 at the Montebello Town Center.
