NEWS: My bill w @JuliaCarmel__ making all single stall bathrooms gender neutral has been signed! This bill is now law.

But this isn't just about restrooms. It's about transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary peoples’ right to be themselves anywhere in New York State.

It is a watershed achievement for trans rights that this bill passed *unanimously* in the NY Assembly

In the State Senate, @JuliaCarmel__ also passed the bill with strong bipartisan support

It’s simple: Transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary people have the right to exist in the world, with safety, protection, and affirmation. Period.

That means being able to go to the store, school, work, a bar or restaurant - or anywhere else - without fear of harassment or discrimination.

This bill eliminates a source of conflict, and pushes New York to be a truly welcoming, accepting, accessible place for all.

Why this bill matters:

🏳️‍⚧️The purpose of a restroom is the same, no matter who uses it. Restricting access based on gender was, frankly, stupid

🏳️‍⚧️ Now many situations where a trans individual would have been at risk of discrimination or harassment are gone

🏳️‍⚧️ Anyone with kids of a different gender, or someone with an aide or support staff of a different gender, now doesn't have to overthink their bathroom choice

🏳️‍⚧️ Anyone who has ever waited in line for a bathroom when another room sat empty: this bill is for you, too.

I am deeply grateful to the groundswell of support from trans organizations and LGBTQ groups across New York State who spoke out to ensure this bill became law.
