THE BSc/HND DISPARITY: A THREAD.
This bird's app has been inundated with diverse opinions on the afore-mentioned. It was the aftermath of @EWAWUNMIII's tweet. I decided to wade into this without any form of prejudice. Please, Kindly read on👇(1/2)
First, here's a background to myself. I had ND (Distinction), HND (Upper Credit) - this was because I was into full time business and couldn't concentrate on my studies. Then of course, I had BSc(First Class). Please, do note that I stated this just to provide clarity. (2)
Clarity, to show that I have experienced both worlds - I'm on a pedastal where I can address this objectively. For the young ones among us, please learn and quit needless arguments. When your future is at stake, you need to let go of being self opinionated and listen.
First, the painful reality:
1. There are companies that don't employ HND graduates. Their adverts are often requesting for BSc(atleast a second - class upper).
2. Haven't you discovered that Nigerian universities don't employ HND graduates as Graduate Assistants?
Even when they've gone through PGD, MSc, and PhD - most are still not considered due largely to the absence of a BSc. It has been like that for years.
3. All foreign scholarships: Chevening(UK) , Commonwealth(UK) , Fulbright(USA) , Australia Awards, Eiffel (France) etc,
Don't reckon with the HND qualification.
4. Even local scholarships for foreign MSc like PTDF, NDDC, NNPC etc, don't consider the HND qualification.
There are just lots of other reasons that I can come up with, but I guess those stated are good enough elaborations.
Well, I wouldn't want to tag my friends here. But after our ND lots of guys left for universities. They are in KPMG, Interswitch, Banks(technical sections not tellers), Oil majors, lecturers(one even went to university and is lecturing in our alma mata- the polytechnic).
Have you even considered that most of your polytechnuc lecturers graduated from universities? Why do universities retain some of their First Class students as GAs but polytechnics let go of their Distinction graduates? I know there are outliers.
Those few with HND who went on to start a business, became successful or were lucky to land good jobs. But trust me, they are few & far between.Of course, some university graduates currently unemployed or under employed may want to argue with me.But, I wouldn't stoop to mudslings.
You see, when life hits hard and you're completely financially down, arguments would become absolutely inconsequential. When you see a beautiful international scholarship opportunity or a job with a mouth-watering offer but can't apply because of the HND set-back,
tweeter bants wouldn't help in any way. There are those who would tell me that not everyone is cut out to work for others - I very much salute your entrepreneurial drive.Others, would quip that the likes of Gates,Zuckerberg,Dangote etc were either drop outs or didn't get educated.
Good luck to you my friend. But you must understand the differences in the society some of these guys live and operate in and those confronting us as a people. So my point is, if you're still young and still in your ND1(write UTME again ) or just done with ND(apply for DE).
Lastly, even with your HND if you're still young, nothing stops you from going for BSc again. If your parents can afford it,go for a conversion degree in a private uni in Nigeria or leave for one abroad. That's likely going to take one or two years.I wish you all the best.#End
I have been turned away from an aptitude test because of HND, told "we don't accept people like you" and other painful experiences. Don't make the same mistake like I did back then , be wise!
Pls, let the young ones learn.
#ASUU #Tinubu #KPMG
Guys, pls don't feel bad for being tagged. I merely want to use you to give this some more readership.
