If anyone is missing their usual gatherings this year and feeling lonely, you are invited to my holiday dinner. I made orange-glazed ham and my grandmother’s pierogis. Tell me your hair color & length, & what you’re bringing, & I’ll draw you in!
.@crvanderpool and @denisehotze are the first to arrive! Throw your coats in the bedroom and pull up a chair. Denise brought her traditional pot of chili, yum! 🌶
.@K8plusK9 and @JamesPrescott77 are here! They’ve brought pecan pie and roasties, respectively. I had to look up “roasties” but now I know it’s British for roast potatoes. Welcome!
Welcome to @BeckyLMcCoy and her kids, who have brought calamari! We have a wonderful variety of dishes already!

(Sorry I am a slow drawer, but please mingle while you wait!)
We’ve been joined by @GTWGNU (who is apparently a minion?) and @DonnaTdinosaur, a human. They brought cranberry sauce and coconut bread! Welcome!
Btw, @meghanrjarvis1 has made us a party playlist on Spotify! (Sorry I deleted the earlier post, it was messing up the threading.)

open.spotify.com/playlist/1Xu23…
Welcome to @simplyjennifer and @becereus who brought Nutella no-bake cookies and chocolate crinkle cookies and I wish I were sitting a little closer to them. :)
Welcome to @NikkiNick86! I’m sorry your stuffed bell peppers look like tiny Christmas ghosts, but I’m sure they are delicious.
Cristina, @sugarbriches82, your tamales look AMAZING. Thanks for coming!
Thank you for coming, @LisaDelay, and for bringing Boilo!
So glad you could make it, @typeAdorable and @Lamson_Lam! Thanks for bringing kale and pomegranate salad (so festive!) and sticky rice with Chinese sausage, respectively!
Sorry again for my slow drawing, everyone! I’m so glad you’re all here, and I will try to draw as many of you in as possible. For the rest, please imagine yourselves chatting “off screen” in the kitchen, living room, and hallway. I also have Muppets movies playing in my bedroom!
Thanks for coming and bringing Nigerian jollof rice and chicken, @johnsonekwe1!
.@BetsyJordyn, the noodle kugel looks so good!
Thanks for bringing pasteles, @AlexaSa16!! And for kicking off our second row (you’re behind the minion :).
(Taking a quick break to eat canned soup, which is very anti-climactic after drawing all these delicious dishes.)
Some animals are showing up and I don’t have the heart to turn them away, particularly @jobunnydogpony’s Skippy and Sugar, because they brought coffee. Good dogs!!
.@CarolKramerMK, thanks for bringing Tigger and treats for all the pets!

Don’t worry, folks — colored-pencil pets are 100% hypoallergenic and house-trained.
Welcome to Rex the cat and his human @TheBigMeanBean. Thanks for bringing ice cream!!
Welcome to @co_pony who brought apple cider and...a pony! 🐴
So glad you’re here, @alynn_80, and the kabsa looks amazing!
Welcome to @PattiB7990, @penton_maggie, and @nicolerunshere’s husband and daughter, and thanks for the mac & cheese, cheesy sausage balls, and chocolate crinkle cookies! Wow!
Welcome,@sofacranky, @ConnieSpillane, and @BaumannAna!! So glad you’re all here, and thanks for the babka, mushroom and pepper pizza, and Brazilian bread! I’m getting hungry!!
Everyone also please raise a glass for @JoniPowers1, and all the other health-care providers and essential workers who can’t be with us. Our hearts and gratitude are with you, Joni, and we’re saving you a plate.
Everyone say hi to @AimeeSchmidt2 and her wife, and their Rottweiler, German shepherd and tureen of gumbo! Also, @hoover_86 has brought rescue dog Elsa who I believe is up for adoption. And @mlmyer is joining us with braided bread. @K8plusK9’s golden retriever Riggs is here, too!
Hello to @pastorjoshmac, @ElizabethHarr32, @rachel_brandt, and @BaptisteKI! I’m so glad you’re here! And thanks for bringing mac & cheese, congealed salad (I made it raspberry), and corn custard.
Hey, @jasonharrod, thanks for coming! The green bean casserole looks great! And, um, no pressure, but I pulled out my guitar just in case you feel like picking out a tune or two after dinner. :)
The sun’s setting here in Boston, so we are now dining by candlelight! 🕯 @Meeshelle89, thanks for the champagne, and I have seemed you above @becereus as requested. @Tracyleiter, thanks for the crab dip! 🦀 I’m so glad you are here.
Gosh, I’m sorry I’m so far behind! Finally setting out @TrvlPrst’s deviled eggs, @Grrjessi’s mashed potatoes and gravy, @Bluhiways’s cranberry apple pie, and @ShellyCara’s hot chocolate and whipped cream! Welcome, new friends!
Sorry, @tracyleiler, I spelled your name wrong earlier, but you are here with your red hair and crab dip! Welcome!
Welcome @KMacEdits, @BelleTheCat, @devine_mb, @amypassalacqua, @csarballo, and @jenluit! I’m so glad you could join us! (I’m putting the food in the kitchen now so I can draw faster.)
And we’re joined by @thatsrando, @jess_erhart, @randomguppies, @widelawns, @sterling_penny, and @tellthestories! So glad you could make it!
Okay, friends, final drawing! Thanks so much to everyone who came! If I did not get to welcome you by name, you are still a welcome, valued guest. Hang out, chat with other folks, swap recipes, play with the dogs, watch The Muppets in the other room. Make yourselves at home!
For those who are just showing up, come on in! There's plenty of leftovers, The Muppets are still playing in the bedroom, and some VERY fascinating conversations have broken out.

Okay, here’s a funny story. When I was making the index for this new book, I wrote down hope as one of the categories. But after I had gone through almost all the benedictions I realized I had only categorized one as hope. (1/4) ImageImage
That seemed like an oversight to me, so I started looking at them again. And I realized it wasn’t that none of them were about hope, but more that all of them were about hope, but not in a direct, imperative way. None of them say, “Be hopeful!“ (2/4)
But hey are about being real & acknowledging pain w/out letting that be the end of the story. Hope is in the edges of each poem, in the soft space between the lines, in the freedom to feel what you feel without judgment & bring the whole of yourself forward into the next moment.

What if the word racist wasn’t the bad thing?
What if it was an awakening?
A realization & a choice like

Alcoholic. Oh, we’d say. Oh, shit.
But then we could go to a meeting
& be real for once.

Hi, I’m ___, we would say
& they’d reply, Hi, ____.
How can we help you get sober?
What if we admitted that we were powerless
without help, That, as James Baldwin said,
white people are trapped in a history which we

do not understand & until we understand, we cannot
be released. What if the word racist is not the end
of freedom, but the beginning?
What if we learned the exact nature of our wrongs &
Admitted them? What if we

Made a list of all persons we & our country had harmed, & became willing to make amends to them all?

What if we made direct amends to such people?
What if we called those amends reparations?
