🧵This beautiful soul has been in the ICU for 7 weeks on a ventilator because of COVID.

Zelene Blancas is a 35 y.o. first grade bilingual teacher in El Paso Texas who tested positive for COVID on October 20th. She did everything right, but tragically still got COVID. 1/6

Zelene is a close friend of a friend, so I've followed her hospital course closely. In Nov we were concerned when her oxygen levels began to drop, b/c I've seen this over & over again in young people. Sadly, her oxygen requirements continued to increase & she was intubated 2/6

She is a kind soul. Two years ago, her twitter video showing her young students taking turns giving each other a hug, handshake, high-five and fist bump to fellow classmates, while leaving the classroom at the end of the day went viral. 3/6

One of the most dangerous jobs amid the pandemic is being a respiratory therapist! They are at EVERY intubation and manage ventilators, as a result they are continuously exposed to deadly COVID aerosols & are under enormous emotional strain! 💔

28 year old #SandraBland was found hanged in a jail cell in Waller County, Texas, on July 13, 2015, three days after being arrested during a traffic stop by #BrianEncinia. Her death was ruled a suicide.

I show this picture a lot, but what you don't know is that all of these mortars were imprinted with, "Made in the USA." It was through @democracynow that I learned about the Iran-Iraq War. Years later, Iraqi insurgents were killing us with munitions we supplied them.

296 days after our first case of COVID in New York City, I got the Moderna vaccine in Yuma, Arizona amid my 3rd surge. The end is near, but I must remain vigilant throughout 2021 because I can still infect my family. Looking forward to day we're all vaccinated! #RightToBareArms

I got the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine because I've seen countless people die from this deadly virus and the vaccine will ensure that I stay alive for my family and patients. Never forget over 2,000 healthcare workers died on the frontlines and 1,000s more intubated. #StickItToCovid
