when much of india’s media failed to report on the current #FarmersProtest with truth and nuance protesters took matters into their own hands by launching the @TimesTrolley : a newspaper for and by protesters 
the @TimesTrolley exists as a grassroots people-led effort that seeks to capture the heartbeat of the protests. it is a welcome and inspiring antidote to india’s notoriously bigotted media machine - that’s long been a cheerleader for nationalism. majoritarianism and mob violence.
thank you to the @TimesTrolley for including a piece of my work in this week’s edition (shoutouts to @yourstruli_hf for translating it into punjabi). this edition of the paper was launched by women protesters with a special focus on women’s involvement.
the birth of this paper reminds me that we’ve always told our own stories. in the 1980s when india enforced an information blockade in punjab and a misinformation campaign globally - we created creative ways to relay our truth.
today: farmers. activists. students. citizen-journalists. musicians. and artists are using every tool at their disposal to get the truth out.
each morning amid the deadly cold - protesters read and equip themselves with the latest information. they spend their days talking about politics and human rights. bookstalls and libraries have long been set up. literature is freely distributed to all. schools are in progress.
what the tyrants in power don’t understand is: revolution is second nature to us. guru nanak birthed us from it. our ancestors- our gurus- our sahibzadey chose to die fighting injustice.
we come from a lineage of warriors who laid their lives down for the freedom and human rights of all people. we are not afraid of pain and death. our lives are meant to be of service to humanity.
future generations will see this movement through the music - art - and words we wrote during this time. long live the revolution. ✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
