The failed Assange extradition got me thinking.

If I wanted to make it hard for certain treaty partners to extradite criminals to the US for trial, one way to do that would be to reinstate the federal death penalty and start executing a lot of prisoners.
For anyone unfamiliar, Barr’s DOJ reinstated federal executions in July, 2019.

Since then, the speed at which they have been pushing these cases through, and the corners they have cut in order to execute these prisoners quickly, has been ugly and hard to explain.
Assange was arrested in the UK in April, 2019. Barr reinstated the death penalty three months later, in July.

The extradition ruling stated that we have 15 days to appeal the decision.

Now it appears that Mexico is offering asylum to Assange.

A couple of months ago - on Nov 18 - Bill Barr dropped a major US case against a former Mexican General who was involved in transnational drug trafficking.

He reportedly did so without consulting senior DEA staff, and the move came as a surprise to everyone involved.
Background:

Assange knows Russia hacked the DNC, because he worked with them.

In 2017, Adam Schiff asked Kushner (and maybe others) if they were aware of anyone making payments to Russian hackers.

Three weeks later, Rohrabacher was on a plane, dangling a pardon to Assange.
After Dems won the House (and hence subpoena power) in 2018, it was imperative that no one find evidence of actual Russian “collusion.”

There was a flurry of activity, including firing the Attorney General, and replacing him with a loyalist (Matt Whittaker).
The last thing that Donald Trump wants is for Julian Assange to be questioned by federal investigators, confirm that Russia hacked the DNC, and that he coordinated his dumps with the campaign (Roger Stone).

This is why they have been dangling a pardon for two and a half years.
In short, Assange is extremely important to Donald Trump.

DJT commuted Roger Stone’s sentence, and pardoned Michael Flynn - but Assange is a wild card, and a ticking time bomb for Trump (and for the RNC, who also coordinated with him) - if US prosecutors get their hands on him.

A lot of folks seem to want to ascribe a strategy to Trump’s actions, but that isn’t necessary. If there is any conscious strategy behind his moves, it is almost certainly not his.

Trump feels trapped and attacked now, and his actions are largely instinctual; fight or flight.

Throughout Trump’s presidency, the GOP has nurtured and manipulated his narcissistic tendencies. And through the election, they nurtured his feeling that he was “robbed.”

Now, Barr, the GOP, and his own staff have abandoned him; they plan to certify electors; to move on.

/2
Narcissists idealize people who they see as useful, or who they see as valuable to be associated with.

Until, eventually, they are no longer seen as being useful or valuable.

At that point, they are treated like refuse, and discarded.

Trump does this to everyone.

@JanNWolfe Know what the craziest part of this revelation about a "shadow group" calling for the assassination of public officials is?

It's that there are *multiple* groups associated with the GOP and/or the Kremlin who could be capable of this.

Trump's legal team:
@JanNWolfe Weird "former" Soviet people who happen to be instigating division and violence in the United States

Texas (Ken Paxton) just sued PA, GA, WI, and MI in the Supreme Court over 'unlawful election results' in 2020 presidential race

MAGA is going crazy over this, believing that this is their magic bullet to overturn the election.

I wonder why Paxton would be desperate to stay in power. Maybe he really needs a pardon for his more severe crimes? 🤔

Corrupt Mexican officials have helped drug cartels in the country obtain state-of-the-art spyware which can be used to hack mobile phones, according to a senior DEA official.

...

including the Israeli company NSO Group and the Italian firm Hacking Team
“In articles [...], Martínez, who was killed at age 48, told her readers that two successive governors in her home state of Veracruz looted the treasury and allowed cartels to operate freely with the help of local and state police.”

Murdered in her home.

Read this thread, and realize that this is just *one state.*

Then imagine what the scale of this suppression program looks like nationwide.

The GOP wants to keep the federal government out of elections because they are bigger than any single state, and can flood them like this.
FTR, I am *not* suggesting the federal government should run or manage elections in states.

But I do believe we need:

1) Federal laws against common electoral dirty tricks

2) Federal guidelines on technology

3) Recognition that national threats require national responses
Indeed:

“Jenna Ellis’ affiliation with [Amistad Project] — as well as other links [...] — suggest a coordinated effort to flood the nation’s courts with repetitive litigation that allows the president to claim the election results remain contested.”
