Been a minute since a full piece has been up on the blog, but here's one I was working on for a while, cut into a first chunk available now ahead of the final day of GA voting (tomorrow): militia.watch/read/georgia-s…
The article, like a previous one on @MilitiaWatch, relies pretty heavily on social network analysis (via @kumupowered), which allows for the creation and analysis of this pretty dense network of actors and organizations militia.watch/read/georgia-s…
KL was, of course, the starting point for this network, which was based on photos together, events together, endorsements, public friendships, group affiliation etc. Here's her first-degree connections per this methodology that we all know by now: militia.watch/read/georgia-s…
And it really only takes two degrees of separation for Loeffler to connect to the entirety of this (admittedly yet incomplete) network map. Scroll through to watch the connections fill in. militia.watch/read/georgia-s…
In addition to the network maps above, the @MilitiaWatch article uses @kumupowered's built-in network analysis tools to get a bit more detail about the network. The verdict? This is a fairly dense network centered around these actors especially. militia.watch/read/georgia-s…
Writing from several journalists was important for putting the @MilitiaWatch Loeffler SNA article together, such as this recent one from @letsgomathias:
There's also a lot of really important research work that's tirelessly done by the documentation wizards at @afainatl who identified yet another actor that was not yet included in the Loeffler network map but deserves to be:
As @AntiFashGordon includes here, Loeffler's campaign adverts have been popular with the American Patriots III%, who posted in their mewe a ground game link for her campaign (they're one of the militias organizing for the militia march on DC)
One might expect a candidate to have prepared answers to questions like who seems to love their policy from the extreme right, but this bird-dogging seems to indicate it's not really the case:
Also, to stress on this article - every single detail is from open source material. This was gathered through news sources, documentation on Twitter, and a little bit of Pepe Silvia work to throw it all together. Thanks to everyone who generated content! militia.watch/read/georgia-s…
Oops - one more QT I meant to include in the thread is from @MicahLoewinger. We worked together on a joint @onthemedia/@MilitiaWatch team project on Zello and one of the channels monitored was of one of the militias included in the chart above. See thread:
Just as a last-minute "gee-whiz" as I'm preparing some of this data for export, I ran a community detection algorithm and changed the colors of nodes to match. Correlates with a lot of what we know about militia structures, but interesting to see APUSA and GOP in same community:
This network (and SNA of it) will likely become more telling with more data included, and all of this is intended solely as a preliminary look at some of these linkages.
Going to do my best to QT and share "militia" presence in DC today (many are likely aiming more for 20 January, when another event is planned). Firearms are banned in DC so it's going to look a bit different than, say, Richmond or Atlanta.
Spotted by @ZTPetrizzo, some folks wearing camo and chest rigs, hanging out on a pillar outside of the White House around 11 AM ET on 6 January:
A printout handed to @EggerDC by an "ominous dude in camo" called for a "national militia" to join a 'muster' west of the Capitol, wear silver armbands to identify themselves as "lawful combatants". Handout near Capitol around 11 AM ET on 6 January:
Daily Mail ran a story yesterday about a 'border militia' forcing the surrender of 300 asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border, that I wanted to provide a few comments on: dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6…
I wrote on this militia, the "United Constitutional Patriots" on @MilitiaWatch. I'm drawing a couple bits from there, but adding as well (I think it's a good place to start for learning more about them regardless) : medium.com/militiawatch/m…
The DM article discusses the armed group stopping around 300 asylum-seekers, an action they have been increasingly engaged in for a few months now. Here are some shots from March included in my piece of this exact threatening act: medium.com/militiawatch/m…
