I wandered down to the Supreme Court, where folks participating in the “Jericho March” are scheduled to pray for SCOTUS/Congress to oppose the 2020 election results.
Also here: folks wearing albs and blowing…smoke out of shofars.
The, uh, nature of the smoke is…unclear.
Another person is brandishing an American flag and wearing…a Guy Fawkes mask?
There’s a lot going on here, people.
As folks mull about, organizers are blasting an overtly Christian nationalist anthem.
“God bless America again, We need the blood of Jesus to wash away our sins…”
We’re now all being asked to leave because police say they’ve found a “suspicious package” nearby.
As people leave, some chant “four more years!”
Others, draped in US flags, blow shofars (without smoke).
Officer telling people “usually this stuff is short-term” (which, in my experience working as a reporter in DC, is often true).
People keep blowing shofars.
There are so many of them.
Oh wow.
Some people in the crowd are upset the gathering has been paused.
They’re gathering across the street from SCOTUS, yelling at police.
“A suspicious package is nothing compared to eugenic tyranny!”
“You all work for Chinese Communists!”
Now singing “God Bless America”
Some people are yelling back “We back the blue!” And “they busted Antifa!”
Others are praying: “This is not about fighting, this is about supporting ‘One Under God.’”
Another: “We feel cheated…we want you to intervene (God).”
At the Capitol now, where people with flags are dancing to the theme from the conservative Christian movie “God’s Not Dead” as people blow shofars.
More Jericho Marchers now, holding flags and signs with Trump’s face on them while singing “How Great is Our God.”
Spoke to the shofar-blowers at the top of this thread.
They are absolutely here as part of the protest. And they are very, very interested in cannabis, which is part of their faith: the Healing Church of Rhode Island.
1. I did a deep dive into faith involvement w/COVID-19 vaccine promotion and distribution.
There’s a lot!
Rabbis in the Moderna trial, NY Methodists offering Gov. Cuomo 421 churches for vaccine rollout, Cardinal Gregory pledging to promote vaccines, etc. religionnews.com/2020/12/10/wit…
2. The thing is, there's *a lot* of vaccine skepticism at the moment.
*Roughly half* of Americans say they aren't sure if they'll get a vaccine or definitely won't.
Meanwhile, large numbers of religious Americans say they *definitely or probably won't.*
3. But according to scholar Elaine Howard Ecklund, faith leaders are poised to make a big difference when it comes to reducing vaccine skepticism.
1. Biden was asked while leaving Mass on Sat whether folks can worship during the pandemic.
His reply: "Yes, safely."
But Biden didn't explain what that means—w/COVID cases spiking and the holidays weeks away—or how his approach will differ from Trump's. religionnews.com/2020/11/24/bid…
2. Indoor worship during the pandemic is a fraught topic this year: pastors have been arrested for flouting guidelines, people have staged massive protests, and Trump picked a fight w/governors over the issue.
Meanwhile, multiple outbreaks have been traced to faith gatherings.
3. Multiple health officials have cautioned against in-person worship — including at least one of the frontrunners for Biden's HHS secretary, Mandy Cohen.
Last month, she said: “If you can’t meet virtually ... meet outside, meet in smaller groups, and wear masks all the time."
At the International Church of Las Vegas, where Trump is attending this morning, a worship band is singing while flag-wavers twirl American flags emblazoned with the Statue of Liberty. (Technically, a violation of the U.S. flag code)
No one onstage I can see is wearing masks.
Pastor Marc Goulet says, "I don't care what anyone says—I love my president."
Later his wife, Pastor Denise Goulet, recounts a story of Trump asking her during his last visit to the church if she enjoys what she does.
Then they shout at the POTUS that he's "doing a great job!"
Pastor Marc Goulet reads a list of things he wants to thank the president for.
Among them:
° Johnson amendment EO
° Giving "a voice to the unborn"
° Moving U.S. embassy to Jerusalem
° Choosing judges who "stand for conservative and Judeo-Christian values"
3. And really this whole video, in which Voight becomes visibly emotional while delivering a prayer/blessing on what appears to be Rudy Giuliani’s podcast.
