Frequently when arguing with a civ-nat type, as I present the reality that Aristotle and the founding fathers understood, they retort with the idea that we shouldn't hold to the ideals of hundreds of years ago. 
For some reason they fail to understand that we continued to have these ideals until just recently. For some of these older folks, it really got subverted in their own lifetime from the 1965 hart-cellar act. Although there were prior subversion of our founding ideals before that.
The kind of society that they remember fondly is the type of society that was largely in agreement with these ideals.

The phrase "Make America Great Again" resonates because there really was a lot of greatness in our, at the time, more functional society. Keep in mind, a lot of "MAGA" folks fail to understand the racial reality of the greatness. So they'll shout MAGA while opposing it deep down.
