Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24 hrs we have identified 843 new cases & completed about 10.3K tests. Our positivity rate is about 8.2%. (1/6)
Our healthcare system is under significant pressure with 919 ppl in hospital, incl 140 in ICU. Sadly, 26 new deaths were reported. My condolences go to their family, friends & anyone mourning the loss of a loved one. (2/6)
Over the last year, this virus has tested all of us. This is a new year, but we still have a stretch of hard road before us. COVID-19 is still here, and still threatens our health system & the well-being of our friends, family and neighbours. (3/6)
We are seeing a stabilization in cases, with occasional days of low new cases due to lower testing volumes, but overall new case numbers, hospitalizations & ICU admissions for COVID-19 are still very high in our province. (4/6)
Vaccines are arriving, but shipments are limited and it will be months before we can immunize the general population. While we work to offer vaccine to those at highest risk, we must continue to act as the vaccine for each other for now. (5/6)
Please keep following the public health measures in place and limit our in-person interactions whenever possible. That is the only way to protect our health system, protect each other & limit the spread in the weeks ahead. (6/6)

We are working hard to immunize Albertans as quickly & safely as possible. @shandro and I have issued a statement clarifying some misinformation that’s circulating. (1/5) alberta.ca/release.cfm?xI…
Early on in planning for #COVID19AB immunization, @AHS_media was asked to devise a strategy to ensure that vaccine wastage was minimized. This is in place & working well (2/5)
The vaccine cannot be re-frozen or put in a fridge. Doses are thawed according to pre-scheduled appointments. Appts are overbooked to ensure that workers are always in line. If no appointments are left but doses available, on-site staff are immunized to prevent waste. (3/5)
