NEWS: @JoeBiden intends to nominate federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland to serve as U.S. attorney general, multiple people familiar tell me, @BoKnowsNews and @nancycordes.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes Garland currently serves as chief judge on United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, considered to be the second-highest federal court in the country.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes Garland, 68, was nominated by former president Barack Obama to the U.S. Supreme Court after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, but he was blocked from consideration by Republican senators.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes Garland is also a veteran of the Justice Department, most notably overseeing the prosecution of Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber and Ted Kaczynski, better known as the “Unabomber.”
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes One person familiar with the choice said that the results of Tuesday’s U.S. Senate runoff elections in Georgia changed the dynamics of Mr. Biden’s choice and made the space for him to pick Garland.

“Last night changed a lot,” this person said.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes Nominating Garland to lead DOJ opens up a slot on the second-highest federal court -- allowing Biden to make an early, prominent judicial pick.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes Garland was chosen over other notable candidates, including former Sen. Doug Jones, also an ex-federal prosecutor and was considered to be a front-runner, especially if Republicans maintained Senate control. Sally Yates, the former deputy attorney general, was also considered.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes Expect the Biden team to cast Garland as a nonpartisan, restorative figure to lead a department imperiled by four years of political interference by President Trump and his associates.
@JoeBiden @BoKnowsNews @nancycordes ONE CORRECTION: Garland is no longer chief judge on the D.C. Court of Appeals. That's now Judge Sri Srinivasan.

@JoeBiden He calls today "an assault on the doing of the people's business." Adds later they "Do not reflect a true America. Do not represent who we are."

WILMINGTON, Del. — @JoeBiden formally introduces @PeteButtigieg as his nominee for transportation secretary. Touts that he now has nine “precedent-busting appointments,” including several other gender and racial firsts.
Biden says Buttigieg will help oversee the second “American railroad revolution” that links suburbs and cities and makes it easier for Americans to commute. Also says DOT will be a key part of his “Build Back Better” plans.
Secretary-Designate @PeteButtigieg recalls his long love of transportation. Notes he proposed to husband @Chasten at an airport terminal. “Don’t let anyone tell you that O’Hare isn’t romantic,” he quips.

TUNE IN: A @CBSNews SPECIAL REPORT as @JoeBiden addresses the nation after the #ElectoralCollege votes. Watch on your local @CBS station or stream live on CBSN: CBSNEWS.com/live Image
@CBSNews @JoeBiden @CBS BIDEN: "306 electoral votes is the same number of electoral votes that Donald Trump and Vice President Pence received when they won in 2016."
@CBSNews @JoeBiden @CBS Incredible that a president-elect has to stand here tonight before the country and cite more than 80 court cases, rejected attempts before state legislatures, and quote an ex-cybersecurity official to try to convince a sitting president's supporters that the election is over.

NEW ⁦@CBSNewsPoll⁩: Most feel election is "settled" but @RealDonaldTrump’s voters disagree cbsnews.com/news/cbs-news-…
FROM THE POLL: 82% of Trump voters say they don’t consider Mr. Biden legitimate and almost half of the president’s voters say Mr. Trump should refuse to concede after that Electoral College vote happens, and instead do all he can to stay in power.
Most voters say their own vote and the votes in their state were recorded and counted correctly. Includes most Dems, R’s and independents. So, much of the doubt among Trump voters appears to stem from a belief about things that they feel happened with other peoples' ballots.

NEW FROM @CBSNewsPoll: @JoeBiden up 2 in Florida; @realDonaldTrump up 2 in Texas: ImageImage
In Florida, the contest has tightened since our last poll in July, from 6 points down to 2 now, amid an ebbing — if still sizable — concern about coronavirus, while President Trump has picked up a few more of the state's remaining uncertain voters. cbsnews.com/news/trump-bid…
IMPORTANT: New @CBSNewsPoll’s in FL and TX finished just before the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. So it remains unknown how a court vacancy might shape the presidential race in these and other states.
