As @stephengroves noted, the National Guard was called out for a protest on the road to Mount Rushmore that was an act of civil disobedience but not violent until the Guard arrived. Only violence from protesters after Guard arrived was pushing back against+hitting shields. 1/x
Protesters say this was self defense, not violence. They never did things like tackled police, throw things at cops, damage police cars. There were no guns. One shield was stolen and vandalized. 2/x
Protesters including @NickTilsen say this response to a non-violent protest was unnecessary, disproportionate + escalated things. Tilsen is trying to obtain documents related to the deployment, plans and action of the Guard and law enforcement that day:

The civil disobedience involved breaking laws (related to being on highways), blocking traffic, ignoring police orders, etc. The Guard was called in after about 30 minutes of that. Again, no violence.

After an impromptu creation on forested tribal land just west of Rapid City, the camp has become highly organized with:

➡️ Large, warm army tents
➡️ A food pantry+mess hall
➡️ Meal train+transportation systems
➡️ Downtown drop site for local+mailed in donations

The camp does not have structured leadership, strict admission policies, and steps that residents must take to continue receiving services like some nonprofits do. The goal is to keep people alive and safe, treat residents with dignity and avoid criminalization.

How my week is going: Last night for “dinner” I ate an entire jar of Talenti mint chocolate chip gelato, nearly an entire jar of pickles and some watermelon with Tajin.
Also I accidentally took my PM meds in the AM.
And therefore didn't take my AM meds ...

South Dakota staged the National Guard during BLM protests this summer. It deployed in Sioux Falls when a small group threw rocks at cops+stores, + then broke into the stores. It was also deployed to remove mostly Lakota ppl who blocked the road to Mount Rushmore when Trump spoke

Deployed, displayed force (Riot gear, military-style vehicles, weapons, etc.) and used force (riot lines pushing w/ shields, pepper spray and pepper ball guns) against mostly Lakota protesters blocking the road to Mount Rushmore during Trump's visit:

A Custer County deputy shot a man on Sunday ... according to local TV reports w/ zero sources that seem to be copied from the Custer newspaper that also cites no source. No press release from the sheriff's office or DCI, your tax dollars at work. Waiting for ppl to call me back.
To add/clarify: I called CCSO this morning and spoke with a dispatcher or deputy who said they didn’t have one so maybe they don’t know the sheriff has a release. I have messages and emails in the sheriff and DCI. There was no FB post either.

Mount Rushmore park rangers had a busy Sunday night, according to a police reporter.

Someone illegally hiked up to the base of the monument and there were three vehicles doing "high speed doughnuts" and hitting each other in a parking lot.

There's been at least one of these cases each year since 2018. Two men and two women. Both men were from Michigan while the woman were from Nebraska and Indiana.

First time on the portion of the Centennial Trail from Ft. Meade to the base of Bulldog and back. Super flowy with some snow, sand, switchbacks and horses we got to pet. Bruised my thumbnail after hitting a tree but landed in a comfy pile of sand.
My “makeup” look: Natural eyebrows, hair not cut in months, bags under the eyes, chapped lips from being outdoors, sun and/or wind burn, buff “necklace.”
