Atomic Habits by @JamesClear is an incredible book.
The principles can help you and your organisation succeed.
Here is a thread on how to use Atomic Habits at work:
1/ Most summaries of Atomic Habits focus on change at home.
This is one is different.
It's curated especially for leaders, coaches and change agents who want to be successful at work.
I share 7 ideas and a key takeaway for you to get started.
2/ Idea 1 - Tiny improvements lead to remarkable results
Organisations assume big changes need big action. The reality, success is the product of daily habits—not once-in-a-lifetime transformations.
3/ Idea 2 - Focus less on goals, OKR's and outcomes. Focus more on systems.
Outcomes are good for setting direction, but they will not be achieved without the right habits. To develop good habits your organisation needs good systems of consistency.
4/ Idea 3 - Change who you are by what you do.
Many organisations begin the process of change by focusing on the outcome. What they want to achieve. A better approach is to focus on who rather than what - Who do we wish to become?
5/ Idea 4 - Design the Environment to make change obvious
Making a better decision is easy and natural when the cues for good habits are right in front of employees. A stable environment where everything has a place and a purpose is an environment where habits can easily form.
6/ Idea 5 - Use social dynamics to make change attractive.
Employees will imitate these three groups in your organisation:
- The close - Your team
- The many - Your organisation at large
- The powerful - Your management
7/ Idea 6 - Enable consistency to make change easy.
Habits form based on frequency, not time. The ability to stay consistent is what enables success. For people to do something consistently, it needs to be easy.
8/ Idea 7 - Reward desired behaviours instantly to make change satisfying.
People are more likely to repeat a behaviour when the experience is satisfying. If the behaviour is hard to do and there is no reward, there is little reason to repeat it.
9/ The Key Takeaway:
When the behaviour of the individual and the organisation are at odds. The behaviour of the organisation wins.
Change your organisational system so effective behaviours can be done consistently.
