White House officials and admin officials are suddenly resigning in protest of Trump inciting violence and undermining democracy -- 2 weeks before they're out of a job anyway, and after standing by Trump as he's done this for years. huffpost.com/entry/white-ho…
Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff to Melania Trump and former WH press sec, has quit. She says she was proud to be part of Melania's “mission to help children everywhere."

She didn’t mention that she stood by Trump when he was ripping children from their families at the border.
Mick Mulvaney, former WH chief of staff and current envoy to N Ireland, has quit in disgust too.

“I can’t stay here. Not after yesterday."

He's worked for Trump since Feb 2017 — the same year Trump blamed “many sides” for the deadly white supremacist clashes in Charlottesville.
WH deputy press sec Sarah Matthews also just quit. She was “deeply disturbed” by the violence at the Capitol but “honored to serve in the Trump admin."

She didn’t mention Trump’s yearslong record of encouraging hate groups + political violence that preceded yesterday's chaos.
There's others too.

WH social secretary Anna Cristina “Rickie” Niceta just quit after being in the post since Feb 2017.

John Costello, deputy asst sec of commerce for intelligence and security, quit while acknowledging that Trump has been diminishing the rule of law for years.
Trump has been inciting violence and trying to destroy our democratic institutions for years. In plain sight.

A principled stand against this now, right before losing their jobs anyway, is a profile in... saving face before applying for a new job? huffpost.com/entry/white-ho…
Transportation Sec Elaine Chao is the latest Trump admin official to resign in protest of yesterday's Trump-fueled violence at the Capitol.

"It has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside.”

Chao has been in Trump's cabinet for his entire presidency.
How is it, you may wonder, that Elaine Chao is suddenly aghast at Trump inciting violence + attacking democracy when...

...he's been doing this for years.

...she's worked for him the entire time.

...She's out of a job in 2 weeks.

Reputation rehab time. huffpost.com/entry/white-ho…

! Pelosi calls on Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, and if he doesn't, House Dems may proceed with impeachment.

"If the vice president and the cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment," she says in press conf.
Trump is "a very dangerous person who should not continue in office," Pelosi says. "This is urgent. This is an emergency of the highest magnitude."

He may only have 13 days left in office, but "any day can be a horror show for America."
"I don't think it will take long to get an answer from the vice president," Pelosi says re: him willingness to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump.

"It will be yes or it will be no."

I mean, true! 😂

The House isn't coming back into session until after the inauguration.

The Senate has adjourned until Jan. 19.

Surreal cap to yesterday.
Update to this: per CNN, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer may announce today, after a 12pm call with members, that he may bring members back into session next week to address impeachment.

If they do, they could move way faster than last time. cnn.com/2021/01/08/pol… Image
Pelosi in a new letter to House Dems:

"If the President does not leave office imminently and willingly, the Congress will proceed with our action."

Sounds like the House is coming back into session for impeachment. No details on timing.

Biden talking now: "At this hour, our democracy is under unprecedented assault."
More Biden on Capitol Hill rioters: "This is not dissent. It's disorder. Chaos. And it must end. Now."
"I call on President Trump to go on national television ... and demand an end to this siege," says Biden.

Fraud for thee but not for me?

At least 17 House Republicans won their races in the same states where, today, they will allege widespread election fraud that should disqualify Joe Biden's win there. huffpost.com/entry/republic…
Congress is about to go into a joint session to certify the results of the presidential election -- and at least 80 House Republicans and 13 Senate Republicans plan to object.

By object, I mean try to overturn the U.S. election results.
There is no evidence of widespread election fraud in any state. They know this.

They simply want to stay in the good graces of Trump, who lost but whose base of supporters plays a role in these lawmakers’ political futures.

That's where we are. Pelosi has gaveled in.

A lot to unpack here.

Also the guy is leaving office just as he came in: using Pocahontas' name as a slur, which tribes and tribal advoacay groups have condemned time and time again.
Speaking of Trump routinely degrading Native people + culture, today's insult falls on the 130th anniversary of the Wounded Knee Massacre.

That was when U.S. soldiers surrounded a peaceful group of Lakota people + slaughtered ~300. Mostly women + children. (h/t @Ruth_HHopkins)
In light of today being the anniversary of Wounded Knee Massacre, a note that there is a House + Senate bill that would strip Medals of Honor from the 20 U.S. soldiers who slaughtered 100s of Native women and children.

Lots of tribal groups want this. huffpost.com/entry/elizabet…

Here's how we're looking in the U.S. today on COVID-19 risk levels, via covidactnow.org.

Dark red = severe outbreak

Red = active or imminent outbreak

Orange = at risk of outbreak

Yellow = slow disease growth

Green = on track to contain COVID Image
Of all 50 states, Hawaii is the only one currently slowing the spread of COVID-19. Image
I've been using covidexitstrategy.org for months and was sad to see that they won't be updating this site anymore. But now I see that their new effort, a partnership with @CovidActNow, is actually better.

You can toggle all the depressing AF data now! Yeah!
