DONALD TRUMP SHOULD NOT HAVE A CAREER IN PUBLIC LIFE.

JOSH HAWLEY SHOULD NOT HAVE A CAREER IN PUBLIC LIFE.

TED CRUZ SHOULD NOT HAVE A CAREER IN PUBLIC LIFE.

Any private and corporate effects on their lives due to their actions over the past week are of their own doing.
This isn’t difficult. The men’s actions were not legitimate. They were built on two months of lies, rejected by courts nationwide, that the men encouraged through these actions and others, which in turn indoctrinated and motivated the mob of insurrectionists on Wednesday.
Trump may be who he is, but Hawley and Cruz both have ~prestigious~ law degrees and ~impressive~ backgrounds. Cruz was a state SG; Hawley a state AG. They knew better and went ahead anyway, which almost makes their behavior worse. And it wasn’t even their re-election!
David French and I don’t agree often, so, note this. Trump, Hawley, and Cruz.

This is not at all surprising while also being lawless and shocking, is why I was all over this from the start, and every aspect of my concerns is proven out by this reporting. wsj.com/articles/white…
Much more reporting is needed here, though, along with congressional oversight investigations. Who at DOJ? Who at the White House? Image
That’s not all, either. The US Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, Bobby Christine, also has some questions to answer. Despite the fact that the office didn’t say who was running things until the 5th, the WSJ says Trump issued an order putting him in charge on the 4th. Image

Most of what's here in the ACLU statement is unobjectionable, but it really avoids confronting the central issue of whether the president was using the platform so inappropriately that it ceased being an issue that actually raised these questions.
If Trump wasn't president, he would have been kicked off Twitter years ago. I opposed kicking Trump off Twitter earlier in his presidency for many of the reasons addressed in this statement. But, as I tweeted in the past month, he'd stopped using it as a president.
He was using it as an ordinary person, and doing far worse with it than he even had previously. So, while I think the ACLU's concerns about Twitter and Facebook's power over our communications are valid and should be considered and addressed, Trump drew way outside the lines.

NOTE: Despite a WSJ story going around, Biden said nothing today about passing some domestic terrorism law. The linked portion here is to a November story, which itself talks about ... a paragraph on the Biden campaign website and a proposal from the unity working groups. Image
This is the WSJ story from today that contains that paragraph. wsj.com/articles/biden…
There is no doubt much energy that will need to go into pressing for policy solutions that will actually address the core issues — instead of just adding more cops or creating some new “anti-terrorism” law. But, Biden made no announcement in any direction on that front today.

Watching the Biden DOJ announcement. The team is impressive, though I have some concerns with Garland. They have their work cut out for them. I look forward to hoping and pushing for the best — but am ready to hold them accountable when they fall short. c-span.org/video/?507789-… Image
Garland has been on the bench for more than two decades. I hope he comes to DOJ with a 2021 progressive assessment of the criminal legal system. The presence of Vanita Gupta and Kristen Clarke in their key roles does give me hope that the administration is looking that direction.
Truly, the fact that Biden is nominating @vanitaguptaCR to be #3 at Justice is an exciting possibility. (Particularly in this week.)

Now that he doesn't trust Pence, I am not surprised to see this.
It's still as bad a proposal as it was in the '70s. And likely, I think, unconstitutional (as DOJ opined then). But it's not a decided matter.
I do think pushback that it could (and likely would) be found to be invalid would be one of the strongest ways to convince him to resign and let Pence run things for the last two weeks, with (from Trump's perspective) some attempt at getting Pence to do it during that time.

I get that you’re all thinking about the 25th Amendment, but in reality, it’s not going to happen if Pence — whose support is required — is not leading them toward unanimity. It must be presented in a way that will convince Trump he has no other option.
In that sense, Chao’s move could be an attempt to create that reality. I don’t know. Knowing Washington and the modern Republican Party, probably not. But I don’t know, and she’s saying that she’s in office until Monday, regardless.
I think there are a lot of moving parts, and, IMHO, people weakening Trump’s standing and position right now are doing a good thing. I probably won’t agree with the ways some do it, but weakening Trump right now — and making sure he knows it — is of paramount importance.
