It may have started as disillusionment, as uncertainty, as fear or even terror. “If this is what a world stacked in my favor looks like, what will it be without that?” But the answer is to build a more just world, where “having the system stacked in your favor” is unnecessary.
But that’s not what they decided to do.
They listened to a man who promised to make them great again. And when he failed they tried to take the symbol of power by force, because they are The Good Ones and a system that doesn’t treat them as such is broken.

But eventually even a system stacked in your favor has no more leeway left to give, and you push too far and no amount of being white and right and the Right Kind Of American can shield you from ALL the consequences, and the shock — even just a taste — can be world-shaking.
Their leader is holed up and muzzled and his lawyers appear to be explaining to him just how much trouble he could be in. And so he has abandoned them — likely even blames them, for not couping better, for not delivering what he wanted them to.
This is not sympathy, as much as it is a recognition of what a ruinous place they find themselves in now. They may yet hold some power, may yet regain even more in the future, will certainly do much harm. But they lost their big bet. And they know, distantly, the bill is coming.
