Q: Why are the rioters being charged with crimes lesser than the one directly on point, Seditious Conspiracy (18 USC §2384)(20 years)?
A: Maybe because sedition charges must be cleared first with Main Justice, the DOJ office Trump has most control over. U.S. Attorney Manual:
1/2
Specifically, sedition charges must be approved by the Assistant A.G. for National Security, John Demers, a career prosecutor who served under Obama before Trump. Since he's career, hopefully he's waiting for Garland to be in place before setting off a shitstorm.

Why am I so adamant that the Nov. 6 insurrectionists need to be charged with MAXIMAL crimes, not mere trespass, and sentenced to decades behind bars?

History.
1/
Adolf Hitler led a very similar insurrection, the Beer Hall Putsch. Like today's RWNJs, his (then-marginal) group tried to kidnap a politician + attacked police in an effort to take over the government.
2/
They were defeated, but what were the consequences? Hitler spent less than a year in jail, + used the time to write "Mein Kampf." Once released, he regrouped, with infamous and mortal results.
3/
Or see this fascinating thread by @Noahpinion, on how repeatedly "going soft" on insurrectionists led Japan to WW2:
4/
@Noahpinion History is replete with examples of governments that fell because they lacked the backbone to defend their principles by HAMMERING domestic terrorists. Let's not do the same.

28 U.S. Code §2384 isn't a mere statute; it's a vital barricade protecting American democracy.

@Noahpinion P.P.S.: Forgot to attach this good article on the Beer Hall Putsch, which was remarkably similar to the RW movement today: history.com/topics/germany…

A short thread on the foreseeability of RW protesters violently forcing their way into the Capitol. See if these details resonate:

"A special legislative session at the... Capitol got off to a chaotic start... with far-right protesters storming the [building]."
1/
"a growing number of protesters pushed their way through the Capitol doors chanting, “let us in"... Police officers donned gas masks as they squared off with protesters, some of whom carried firearms and bear spray"
2/
"Among the protesters were members of Patriot Prayer, a far-right group based in Vancouver, Washington, that attracts white supremacists and has engaged in violence."

"officers were sprayed with 'some kind of chemical agent'... while trying to repel people from the building"

I appreciate Ezra's empathy here. After all, we generally view the people who drank the Kool-Aid at Jonestown as victims, not perpetrators. But also? The adults at Jonestown who voluntarily gave poison to their own children KNEW THAT GIVING POISON TO CHILDREN WAS WRONG.
1/
(And yes, I know that many at Jonestown were forced at gunpoint to do so. I'm taking about the ones who weren't.)
2/
Every person who set foot in the Capitol yesterday knew they weren't supposed to be there. Regardless of their mistaken beliefs, they knew what they were doing at that moment was wrong.

Rove: $ security makes voters Republican, but education makes even the wealthy vote Democrat.

Which... is accurate. I've long asserted "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" did as much harm as Reaganism: Wealth as religion. Wealth as ethics. 1 Tim. 6:10: biblegateway.com/passage/?searc…

Have you ever wondered why Trump adores One America News Network? And why OANN loves Trump? And what the hell OANN even IS, anyway? That Rove quote explains it.
2/
OANN is owned by Robert Herring, the 79-year-old son of Louisiana sharecroppers, who dropped out of high school, opened a chain of pet shops, and ultimately made millions printing circuit boards at the start of the tech revolution.

"Swanson said the directive came from USPS headquarters about a week ago and that boxes are probably being removed nationwide."

Nah, sis. "A week ago" = this is Trump's stooge's doing. He gets zero benefit of the doubt. A couple reasons why:
1/
I have a fairly solid understanding of USPS operations dating back over a decade, for: reasons. Here are a few reasons not to trust anything the PM General is doing right now:
2/
• He claims he's saving $ by eliminating overtime. But mail volumes vary WILDLY; USPS uses overtime when vols are high to avoid overstaffing when volumes are low; ie, OT can save money.

@EllieRushing Wow. 39 U.S. Code § 101, Postal policy: "(a) The United States Postal Service shall be operated as a basic and fundamental service provided to the people by the Government of the United States, authorized by the Constitution... and supported by the people..."
1/
@EllieRushing "...The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people..."
2/
@EllieRushing "It shall provide prompt, reliable, + efficient services to patrons in all areas + shall render postal services to all communities. The costs of establishing + maintaining the Postal Service shall not be apportioned to impair the overall value of such service to the people."
