A fellow Catholic contacted me the day after Trump supporters attacked Congress. He was advised by a white colleague to be extra careful bc there is a mob mentality where they live and some of that mob’s anger may be directed at AfAms. 1/
He is especially disturbed by what he terms his “über Catholic community” bc they act like nothing is going on. He sought their support when the KKK marched less than 30 miles from where he lives and received nothing. 2/
So now he does not go out at night. He is praying that God puts him with a community where he can grow, flourish, and be safe. He laughs about the safe bc he knows what it means to be Black in America but he still prays that intention anyway. 3/
I wish I could tell u that the convo I had w him was unique but it isn’t. Some of your Black Catholic bros & sisters, in 2021, know the attack on the hill also is a signal abt our safety as Black ppl. When white supremacists perceive a loss of power, we are useful targets. 4/
This isn’t to say all Trump supporters are white supremacists. It is to say that those who are pose a threat to our safety. So right now concern about Parler seems inconsequential in comparison to the matter of being alive & unharmed. 5/
Some of my friends remarked that Blk folks kneeling quietly during the anthem elicited more rage from their white Catholic friends than white ppl storming the Capitol and defecating and urinating in the bldg along w waving the Confederate flag while in there. How can this be? 6/

If you think a discussion of manifest grave sin of public figures only applies to your “political enemies” then you are missing the fact that the demands of the faith apply regardless of political affiliation. Don’t let your politics become your idol. 1/
In our culture where marriage and abortion are at odds with our faith, and we are discussing scandal, we shouldn’t downplay either matter. The politicizing of canon 915 as a cudgel to be employed & discussed *only* in the case of “political enemies” harms the faithful. 2/
It is shameful that we don’t even consider not only Melania’s scandalous marriage but also the fact the Pence is the 2nd Catholic VP in the history of the U.S. & he has rejected the faith! We should be concerned 4 Biden, Pence, & Melania instead of settling 4 temporal pwr. 3/

The Black Woman Who Biked Across the US Alone During the 1930s Jim Crow Era was named #BessieStringfield and she was a #BlackCatholic. #TheMotorcycleQueenofMiami vice.com/en/article/qvx…
Born in 1911, Stringfield got her first motorcycle, a 1928 Indian Scout, while she was still in her teens and taught herself how to ride it. vice.com/en/article/qvx…
At the age of 19, young Stringfield flipped a penny onto a map of the US then ventured out on her bike alone. Interstate highways didn’t yet exist at the time, but the rough, unpaved roads didn’t deter her. bit.ly/36McNji

“His parents were devout Catholics who said grace before and after meals, and led the children in a family rosary each day. Thompson discerned a calling to the priesthood, and while his white priest was supportive, his own diocese of Lafayette was not.“ commonwealmagazine.org/sign-contradic…
“He graduated from seminary in 1957, but his bishop would not accept him as a priest. Bishop Charles Greco of the neighboring diocese of Alexandria did accept him, and he became the first black priest to be ordained there.”
“While Thompson was grateful to Bp Greco for being the only Southern bishop willing to ordain him, the 2 frequently quarrelled, particularly about the treatment of black Catholics in the diocese. In 1963, Thompson gave an extended interview.....that did not sit well with the Bp.”
