Wanted to share key points from a conversation with @Chartwells_UK this morning.
There is a meeting scheduled between Chartwells and @educationgovuk today.
(1)
Information provided –

FSM Hampers are currently distributed to provide 10 lunch meals per child across 2 weeks.

This concerns me firstly as I relied on breakfast club, FSM and after-school clubs. Is 1 meal a day from Mon-Fri sufficient for children most vulnerable?

(2)
Information provided –

The value uplift of the FSM Hampers has not yet come into play.

We have so many independent businesses who have struggled their way through 2020 – why can’t we mobilize them to support the distribution of food packages? Or am I being naïve?

(3)
Information provided –

Chartwells supply FSM when schools are operational. Chartwells is not the exclusive supplier of FSM across the UK. Chartwells have asked to make it clear that the picture in circulation that features the pepper is not one of their hampers.

(4)
Information provided –

Chartwell hampers feature a supporting recipe so that families can easily identify.

(5)
Information provided –

Suppliers are typically offered directive from DfE and once food is supplied to the school network, schools have the autonomy over how the hampers are distributed. Schools, if this is not the case, please let me know.

(6)
One thing that is clear is that there was very little communication with the suppliers that a national lockdown was coming. We MUST do better. Children shouldn’t be going hungry on the basis that we aren’t communicating or being transparent with plans. That is unacceptable. (7)
I have a game today so have to log off but I wanted to update you on the conversation and I look forward to hearing the outcome of the DfE meeting today.
@Chartwells_UK @educationgovuk

Something is going wrong and we need to fix it, quickly!

Paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children, 2.2M of them who currently qualify for Free School Meals. 42% newly registered. Not to mention the 1.5M children who currently don’t qualify.
Since March 32% of families have suffered a drop in income...

13.2% rise in unemployment expected...

We aren’t in the same position we were in in the Summer, it’s much worse. The number of children with little to no access to food has risen significantly.
🗣 @halfon4harlowMP

“If you feed children properly, you increase educational attainment, boost life chances and, therefore, cut costs in the long run.”

The attainment gap btw between disadvantaged and those better off is estimated to be 75%. A result of school closures...

#endchildfoodpoverty is not about children going hungry during the school holidays, this is about children going hungry full stop. Let’s not loose sight of the bigger picture here. There are at least 1.5million children we are not reaching with the free school meal scheme...
(1)
1.5million children have little to no access to food today...

As you pour your cereal, grab your pastry and your coffee to go this morning, think about that. 1.5million without any help at all.
(2)
Are we all just going to go about our day knowing that 1.5M 7-16 year olds need our help and our voice??

We need a long term framework to protect our children not another sticking plaster.

The asks remain the same and we won’t settle for less 👇🏾 (3)

Imagine going to bed at night with a full stomach, preparing for a good sleep, knowing there are 1.1M helpless children who are probably wide awake listening to their stomachs grumbling or their parents sobbing, whose life could be significantly improved by one decision...(1)
If a child needs access to food at school, OF COURSE they need access to it at home! Why can't we provide assurance that our children will be protected during school holidays? Why is this even a question?? How do we justify not helping them?? People are losing their jobs...(2)
We are the 'United' kingdom. Surely we know right from wrong. I don't care where you are from or how old you are. You don't have to have experienced food poverty to know it is unacceptable in 2020. And this is not a COVID problem in the UK (3)

1. When you wake up this morning and run your shower, take a second to think about parents who have had their water turned off during lockdown
#maketheuturn
2. When you turn on your kettle to make a cup of tea or coffee think of those parents who have had to default on electricity bill payments just to make ends meet having lost their jobs during the pandemic
#maketheuturn
3. And when you head to the fridge to grab the milk, stop and recognise that parents of at least 200,000 children across the country this morning are waking up to empty shelving

Wouldn’t normally share these types of things but this certificate is not just for me, it belongs to you all. Each and every one of you that has contributed the few £s you can, you’ve all made a huge difference (1) Image
2.8million children a week are receiving meals they otherwise wouldn’t have during this lockdown because of YOUR help. I couldn’t have done any of this without the help of you all and @Fareshare (2)
To be recognised by my city is a great feeling. From being young I knew that if I ever got in a position that I could help I would and I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved so far. Thank you all, you’re all superstars 🤩♥️ (3)
