South Carolina GOP lawmakers @RepNancyMace, @SenatorTimScott & @LindseyGrahamSC said today they oppose impeaching President Trump, as the Democrat-controlled House goes forward with that effort amid some Republican support in both the House & Senate. Their stated reasons: 1/7
Scott & Graham argue impeachment isn't warranted because Trump has promised peaceful transition of power. However, the crux of impeachment (per Dems & some GOP) is the belief Trump incited the Capitol violence. This was before promising peace. Graham nor Scott address this. 2/7
Mace notably diverges from the Senators here. She today on the House floor said Trump & his cohorts in government are responsible for the Capitol violence, & should be held accountable despite qualms with "constitutionality" of impeachment efforts. abcnews4.com/news/lowcountr… 3/7
Lindsey Graham wants accountability for those in the "seditious mob" that stormed the Capitol. He doesn't address incitement. Instead he chooses partisanship. He accuses Dems of a "do-over," implores GOP to think of the party's future, & warns against demonizing Trump's base. 4/7
Graham & Mace reconnect in their argument over the constitutionality of the impeachment. Both allege there's been no due process (House Judiciary Cmte hearings, witness testimony, etc) for Trump in these latest impeachment proceedings. Graham says it sets a bad precedent. 5/7
Tim Scott simply adds impeachment efforts — 8 days before Trump leaves office — fly in direct opposition to what President-elect Joe Biden has been calling for regarding peace and reconciliation. 6/7 abcnews4.com/news/local/wil…
Both Graham & Scott also say impeachment will only cause more hate & divide in this country. Mace indirectly suggests the same, saying what happened at the Capitol & preceding unrest is a result of longterm divisive rhetoric & actions by both Dems & GOP. 7/7
