Due process is guaranteed under the Fifth & Fourteenth Amendment. If a citizen will be affected by a government decision, it must give advance notice of what the government plans to do & how its action may deprive them of life, liberty, or property.
With that definition in mind, let's break down yesterday's @TheJusticeDept presser.
"The FBI has a long memory and a broad reach."
"Agents from our local field offices will be knocking at your door if we find out that you were part of the criminal activity at the Capitol."
1/
"But before we do this, this is your opportunity to come forward as several individuals who were involved in Wednesday's riots have done: to volunteer about their participation."
2/
"We have to separate the aspirational from the intentional and determine which of the individuals saying despicable things on the internet are just practicing keyboard bravado or if they actually have the intent to do harm."
3/
"Since our call for tips, videos, and pictures, we have received more than 100,000 pieces of digital media, which is absolutely fantastic. And we are scouring every one for investigative and intelligence leads."
4/
"When criminal conduct occurs, we try to obviously charge people as soon as possible."
"We looked for the most simple charge we could file as quick as possible. So therefore the initial charges filed in many of these cases, a lot of them were misdemeanors."
5/
"I want to clarify misconception. This is only the beginning. After these charges are filed that allows law enforcement across the US to arrest people from Dallas to Arkansas to Nashville to Cleveland to Jacksonville & that’s what’s happened over the past several days."
6/
"After those charges are filed then we have the ability to then indict these individuals on more significant charges. And that’s exactly what has happened. For example, yesterday, again only days after this event happened, we had the grand jury & the District of Columbia up."
7/
"Our office organized a strike force of very senior national security prosecutors and public corruption prosecutors, their only marching orders from me are to build, seditious and conspiracy charges related to the most heinous acts that occurred in the Capitol."
8/
"These are significant charges (sedition & conspiracy) that have felonies with prison terms of up to 20 years."
"In addition to that, we’re looking and taking a priority with cases in which weapons were involved & cases in which destructive devices were involved."
9/
"I think there’s a lot of misconceptions about what happened within the Capitol, and it’s going to come into LASER FOCUS, I think over the next weeks and days.
And I think people are going to be SHOCKED with some of the AGREGIOUS contact that happened within the Capitol."
10/
"The third area of emphasis that our office is also focusing on is we set up a strike force to focus on ASSAULT on the MEDIA.
We have assigned specific prosecutors in our office to focus on those cases as well."
11/
Big Notice Moment:
"I’m naming all these different strike forces to just emphasize, regardless of who the victim was, regardless of who the perpetrator was, we’re treating all of these cases equally."
Regardless of the PERPETRATOR, they're treating cases equally.
12/
"Agents, analysts, FBI personnel in my office & across the country are scrubbing video, we’re talking to witnesses, we’re talking to individuals that we arrest & we’re gathering that intel to understand WHAT HAPPENED on the 6th, that day in the Capitol, outside the Capitol."
13/
"What was the purpose of those devices being planted? Was it a diversionary type of a tactic used by some of these rioters? Or did it have some other... nefarious purpose? So that is what ATF, FBI, MPD are looking and looking for those persons that planted those devices."
14/
"And as mentioned with this strike force that was established to focus strictly on sedition charges, we’re looking at and TREATING THIS just like a significant international counter-terrorism or counter-intelligence operation."
15/
"We’re looking at everything: MONEY, TRAVEL RECORDS, looking at disposition, MOVEMENT, communication records so no resource related to the FBI will be unchecked in...trying to DETERMINE IF THERE WAS A COMMAND & CONTROL, how it operated & how they executed these activities."
16/
CODA/
"So I just want to make THAT PERFECTLY CLEAR and that we’re looking at ALL ANGLES in that. EVERY ROCK IS BEING UNTURNED because we have to bring that person to justice OR people to justice."
"David Cohen, tapped to be deputy director to President-elect Biden’s choice of Bill Burns to run the CIA, used to enjoy being known as President Barack Obama’s 'financial Batman.'"
As Ass't Sec of Treasury for Terrorism & Financial Intelligence from 2009 to 2015, Cohen REVELED in plunging DEEP into the subterranean passages of international money laundering, shining a harsh light on militant networks lurking there & discovering & emptying their war chests.
Cohen learned the specialized languages of intern'l bankers & financial regulators. He used those skills TO GO AFTER THE WORST OF THE WORST not by locking them up—that’s a job for Justice, FBI, DEA & DHS—but BY DEPRIVING them of funds that are the lifeblood of any organization.
It started last Fri with my friend - who we will call Bert. He's an anesthesiologist in Virginia & had intubated a patient the previous Mon. Upon entering the hospital, patient had NOT been tested. So Bert was NOT allowed to wear an N95 mask.
2/The patient was ultimately given a test. 4 DAYS later, the results came back POSITIVE.
So now 4 DAYS LATER, Bert gets the call from his employer with this news. No need to get the test, they said. Wait to see if you have any symptoms, they said. And keep coming in to work.
3/So Bert is now freaking out, thinking back to how much time he had spent with this patient, how he was NOT allowed to wear an N95 mask when treating any patient who had NOT yet been tested, regardless of displaying COVID-esque symptoms.
Thank you for this much needed interview with ScienceInsider that was both informative and provided a much needed laugh break. sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/i…
"EVER" would be the correct answer.
"... then we go in to see the president, we present [our consensus] to him and somebody writes a speech. Then he gets up and ad libs on his speech. And then we're up there to try and answer questions."
PSA: My mother-in-law passed away last night due to complications related to cancer. She was 77, in a hospice facility & we were prepared for her passing.
But not being able to hold a funeral & the challenges of crying while wearing a mask we were not prepared for. #OurNewNormal
This is the SURREAL discussion we had to have that led to the decision of not holding a funeral service:
1) If its 10 or less people, how do you select which ones?
2) Most of her friends who would insist on coming are 75+.
3) How do you enforce no hugging in times of mourning?
We also hope by communicating our reasons for NOT holding a service will help educate those who may not be as informed or fully understand risks about COVID-19.
We are showing how serious we are taking this to those that may not have been listening or believing.
1/ WaPo: The coronavirus can be shed by people even BEFORE they develop symptoms. That pre-symptomatic transmission has helped it become a STEALTH contagion, spreading through communities before they know what hit them.
2/Some coronavirus can potentially remain viable — capable of infecting a person — for up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 3 days on plastic and stainless steel.
3/ The MAIN WAY the virus has been spreading has been through droplets — like when someone SNEEZES or COUGHS. Such DROPLETS can TRAVEL up to SIX FEET.
