Google Search Console reports can get complicated. Especially when it comes to news-related reports.
There are two distinct reports in GSC that sound the same, but measure completely different traffic types: the News search type & the Google News tab.
Here's the difference:
Report #1 integration started tracking in GSC on June 30th 2020. This traffic is from the 'news' tab in Search. A user types a query into the search bar, results are returned within the news tab. Data in GSC shows a sampled version of these queries.
Report #2 is a bit more complicated. Data goes back to Dec 16th 2020 and is for traffic from news.google.com or the Google News app. I use the iOS version, but is also on Android. Unlike #1, results are primarily based on your interest profile. So no query data in GSC.
In the examples for each report I've shown a post by @sengineland. I'd expect that a large chunk of their Search traffic would come from the Top Stories carousel, which currently can't be identified (like what the News tab has). Hopefully we see that integrated in the future.
