Joe Biden’s Delaware farewell is about to begin. One person waiting near his house has a sign that reads “TU!” which we’ve interpreted as “thank you.”
Biden is going to attend a send-off event at the Major Joseph R. "Beau" Biden III National Guard/Reserve Center here in Delaware, transition says.
Jill Biden joins her immediate family at the Biden send-off event at the New Castle Airport.
Crowd here is forcibly socially distanced with bunting-covered bike racks.
“After the pain and darkness of the past 4 years and more acutely of the past 10 months, I feel overwhelmed with emotion standing before you today,” Gov. John Carney says at Biden send off. But he says he has hope because “Joe Biden was born for this moment.”
Gov. Carney: “You are what this country needs. You are what we all need. And so as you head down to Washington, know that you have the thoughts and prayers of a grateful and incredibly proud state of Delaware.”
Biden wipes away a tear as he says goodbye to Delaware. “It’s kind of emotional,” he says.
Biden’s wife, kids and grandkids loom on as he says thank you and farewell to Delaware. “I know these are dark times but there’s always light.” Says he learned that in Delaware.
“I’ll always be a proud son of the state of Delaware,” Biden says. He quotes Joyce on Dublin being in his heart. “Excuse the emotion but when I die Delaware will be written on my heart.”
Biden got emotional as he spoke about his late son Beau. “We only have one regret. He’s not here,” Biden says, repeating what he said during the campaign, that it should’ve been Beau running for president.
Joe and Jill Biden wave goodbye to Delaware.
