Covid in the UK.

Thread.

It’s not going well. But why?

1/37
Let’s look at the beginning. Horrendous stories from Wuhan. A first big European breakout in Italy in April 2020. However, they found Covid in water samples taken in DECEMBER in Italy, so the awful death rates in Northern Italy in April had been developing for 3-4 months.

2/37
Everyone in China wore masks. A criminal offence not to. The UK advice was first not to shake hands. Except for bloviator Johnson. Problem is that Covid is also AIRBOURNE – it spreads also in droplets of air.

3/37
Masks ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE method of reducing spread – or the 'R' rate. Along with social distancing.

4/37
The UK media is polluted with a number of poisonous shock jock populists and facile neo-fascist MPs who think it is funny to endanger life by supporting conspiracy theories.

5/37
And say cretinous things that masks don’t protect people, when they do. Proven. Scientific fact. By experts.

6/37
The UK Govt STOPPED much needed shipments of PPE, in mid transport, in order that orders to their donors be given priority – they were – and they delivered unusable PPE at many times the price. But stuffed millions into their off-shore bank accounts.

7/37
High rates of death of NHS workers – but these were mostly, at the start, in non Covid wards – The NHS did not have masks for staff in non-Covid wards.

8/37
In the first wave, exceptionally high rates of death in some areas. And these areas turned out to be the ones that did not close GP surgeries immediately. Often the poorest areas. Covid spread in waiting rooms like a viral nightmare.

9/37
Covid spread in nursing homes. Because the Govt moved infected people from hospitals to nursing homes. And the nursing homes did not have the PPE.

10/37
Covid killed people at home. A trait of Covid is silent hypoxia. So you don’t know if you are close to asphyxiation until it is too late to do something about it. Many died at home without any palliative care.

11/37
Many arrived too late to be treated effectively hospital. Hence the appalling recovery rate of Covid patients in the UK. Which the Govt does not publish.

12/37
The Govt created Nightingale hospitals, when they knew that they did not have the ICU beds or the nurses to man the hospitals. PR. A heinous and dishonest waste of money. An awful scandal.

13/37
Track and trace - £11,000,000,000 WASTED. A puff of smoke. Yet they still fail to make not wearing masks in public spaces a criminal offence.

14/37
The Govt say that the lack of preparation was not their fault. Except it was. The Govt did an epidemic response preparedness study. Identified EXACTLY what needed to be done, in 2016.

15/37
Except they ignored it. And did nothing. Result: Insufficient PPE. ICUs over run, contributing to the inability to treat.

16/37
Germany did an epidemic response preparedness study – and IMPLEMENTED the findings. Hence the far lower death rate in Germany.

17/37
China succeeded in shutting Covid down?

Why not the UK?

18/37
Well…. “China is Communist! We are a democracy. We care about people’s democratic rights, and their freedom of movement.”

Say the gaslighters.

Including British MPs.

To their eternal shame.

19/37
NZ, Taiwan, Japan, shut Covid down. Island nations that, geopolitically, have much in common with the UK. Why did the UK fail?

20/37
Well “these are smaller countries, easier to control the population”… yadeyadeya say the gaslighters.

21/37
Encouraging killer crowds of Covid spreaders to go on anti-mask marches, and other such incredible, unbelievable stupidities. Such as these fine specimens in Trafalgar square.

22/37

How many of them are dead now? A congregation of Trumpies if there ever was. All hero worshipers of Johnson.

23/37
The truth is that NZ and Thailand put in place effective Track and Trace, and blocked borders, immediately. The UK only seeing fit to block borders now.

24/37
Finally. But a full year later than it should have happened. Zero border checks seemed to be the default policy for the UK. Eat out to help out. Christmas inside. School spreader event for a day. Chaos, incompetence, and stupidity.

25/37
There is no excuse. There is no rationale. The UK Govt has been reckless, dangerous, and incompetent and has un-necessarily caused the early, troubled, traumatic, lonely and painful deaths of 100,000 of its citizens.

26/37
Cheered on by the ignorant malign stupidity of the likes of

@juliahb1

@toadmeister

@DanielJHannan

@allisonpearson

@JamesDelingpole

@FatEmperor

and others.

27/37
The UK’s PM, Alex de Pieffel Johson, but renaming himself Boris for his ‘followers’ – this inane, vapid man, untroubled by principles, morals, or a grasp of the detail, saw Covid as an OPPORTUNITY to make the UK a global trading nation once again!

28/37
It is as if the utter, utter fool, believes the lies that come out of his own mouth. And yet this blatant liar is supported and cheered on by some Govt ministers who are intelligent enough to see what is going on, yet still…

29/37
…unable to define themselves by decency and resign.

30/37
This is a killer Government. A Government that has shamelessly and transparently sized Covid as an opportunity to cover up the destruction they have caused by their Brexit.

31/37
As well as offering a good grifting opportunity for their mates.

32/37
For those who argue that the Govt is not to blame, they are ignoring the simple and multiple instances of cause and effect. Herd immunity. Johnson shaking hands.

33/37
‘Wash through the population…’ – these are not idle things – these are the drivers, the causes of the misinformed approaches that caused the effect of the devastating death toll that the UK is facing.

34/37
And as if the devastating economic effects of Covid in the UK are not enough (meanwhile China, Taiwan, NZ are doing well) they have managed to absolutely screw UK industry and services with the most incredibly damaging and utterly moronic Brexit agreement…

35/37
…stuffed through Parliament with no time for scrutiny or rational analysis.

36/37
To be absolutely clear, the UK Govt is a killer set of liars, charlatans, neo-fascists and fools. They are not decent. They do not represent British values. They need to go. They should follow their ghastly hero Trump into obscurity and eternal abject shame.

A year ago we left the EU, but the real impact of leaving will only be felt from tomorrow.

1/13
Although the ‘deal’ includes tariff free access to the single market and customs union – it still destroys friction free access to the EU markets, which will destroy many UK businesses and cost many UK jobs.

2/13
It of course fails to address the UK’s services industry – which represents 80% of trade with the EU.

EU lorry drivers from Germany, Eastern Europe, and across the EU drive in the EU.

They avoid travelling to third countries because delays at the border are very expensive.

Some do, if they are paid more. But only a few.

1/
There was a reason why EU lorry drivers were not availing themselves of the opportunity to find out what Brexit means as far as driving to the UK was concerned.

2/

The simple reason: they will not be driving to the UK post 1st Jan 2021. It’s the economics. They pay £100,000+ for their lorry. They work on small margins. Parking in a lorry park in Kent won’t cut it.

What has Brexit flagged to me?.... that there is a group of people with a phenomenally developed capability to talk and write. Who are looked upon by many as gurus.

Thread.

Sages. Marvellous individuals. People with drive, gusto and personality. Who are wheeled out into the bright lights of the TV cameras and repeatedly the demonic nature of their lies are hardly questioned.

2/31
Think Farage, Hanan, Singham, Baker, Rees-Mogg. Their sentences are so well constructed, such perfect button pressers, and delivered in a relentless monologic style, that the rationale is not questioned.

Peter Geoghegan’s superbly written, nuanced account of why the UK is currently is where it is.

And yes, the book does highlight the ways in which the Remain campaign failed democracy, and used unfair and deceptive means, as well as the multiple Leave campaign groups.

2/5
This book does not incite anger or division – it simply describes where we are at. It is tremendously important because pundits, politicians, as well as the general public can miss a trick.

Muckspreaders.

And the anti-mask protests in Parliament square.

Thread.

1/28
The heart of the UK popular press has been about muckspreading.

News of the World being perhaps the worst example.

2/28
“Well, it’s how you sell papers.” …is the justification that you could expect a press owner to say.

Serfdom of the mind. Thread.
Russia in the time of St Peter the Great sowed the grains for the Russian revolution. The ‘success’ in wealth terms of that period was never surpassed. St Petersburg being an enduring legacy. However was a success built on the model of serfdom.
Landowners that were responsible for tracts of land as big as Wales, with populations in the 100,000s, but those populations were serfs. Not quite slaves, as they were provided with more than food. But they were considered chattel of the estate, effectively owned by their masters
