1. Dear Primary, Secondary, Further ed and Higher ed colleagues,
Many of you may have experienced working with our youngest children- but as the "foundation stage" the work that happens in these early years will be of great importance to you....
2. Right now whichever phase we work in- whether it is a baby room or a university- it is fair to say that we are all working flat out to do the very best for those we work with. But in this thread I wanted to share with you some of the mess that our sector finds itself in...
3. Firstly- whilst most schools and educational establishments are closed to most students, and whilst we battle with Zoom, teams, google classroom and as lateral flow testing starts to be rolled out- the picture in the sector working with our youngest children is very different.
4. This is the first real piece of mainstream media attention we have seen.
*Cases are rising.
*Staff are not on immunisation plan
*No lateral flow testing on site.
...and if they close to protect staff/children- they may never reopen.
5. Now imagaine within your own sector- imagine if you were told there would be a new statutory test coming into force from September 2021. A test that would take you away from your pupils before you've got to know them. A test that won't be for your benefit- or even theirs.
6. A test that tests narrow areas of learning including content you wouldn't even expect them to know at their age. A test that is costing £11 million- whilst children go hungry and don't have the tech they needed during lockdown. A test that has been proven to be flawed.
7. Now imagine that from Sept 21 your complete ed framework has been rewritten including assessment procedures and what you're expected to teach.
You've had no CPD. No time to really plan for these major changes- you've just been trying to get through teaching in a pandemic.
8. And also add in that much of the reform is inappropriate for your students and is steering you down a road you know is not what they need.
It wasn't right before the pandemic or during it.
It definitely won't be right after it.
1. This a really important read including views from @EYAlliance and @earlyed_uk who share their disappointment and concerns, along with @NickGibbUK who sees this as a way of improving standards.
2. No offence Mr Gibb- but as an EYs teacher of 20+ years I’m standing with organisations who understand young children, respect me as a practitioner at the coal face, listen to my views, consult me and represent me.
3. The world has changed. And whilst I agree fully the EYFS needed reviewing as did Development Matters- what it didn’t need was a complete rewrite. The opportunity has been completely squandered to build on something already held in high regard internationally.
1. Right- I’m probably going to get trolled for not wanting the best for children, wanting them to fail and so on.... but I can’t stay quiet and I’m hoping someone out there will share my concerns about today’s announcement from the DFE around the investment in YrR catch up...
2. So this happened today. A £9m investment into a YrR catch up programme. Many on twitter seem to be welcoming this.
3. The deficit model is alive and well in this email I received today announcing the programme... and shows yet again the DFE do not understand that YrR is not full of 5 year olds....
1. Lots of talk of children being “behind” when schools reopen due to school closures. Here’s my thoughts...
2. There’s no exams or tests this year. So what exactly are they behind in?
3. We aren’t talking about children in one school here, we are talking about children in a whole country, in a whole world... so who are they behind? The children from last year who had a full year of schooling? It’s not comparable.
In our school we use the “In the moment planning” approach through EYs. Our interactions are everything!
Today this young mathematician was one of my focus children.
He came in to school this morning and started filling the numicon board with pegs.....
... but then it was time for register and phonics. I SUGGESTED we make a do not touch sign and MODELLED how to do this....we put the sign on his work....
After the register and phonics session-he headed straight back to his self chosen activity and continued. I PROVIDED some marbles and he sat match a marble to each peg- he did this for every peg....
