Every day there’s more proof that the news media will never stop booking the terrorists who incited the Capitol attack to ask them more about their interesting opinions regarding “voter fraud”
You’ve booked someone who lied about a monumental topic knowing it was a lie. He says he has no regrets and will do it again. Why on earth would a journalist continue to interview someone who has just said they are going to lie about whatever they want
There’s really only one way to do this if you’re going to do it:
- do you acknowledge there was no voter fraud?
- when you said there was, did you think there was or did you know it was a lie?
- did you lie to please trump knowing it wouldn’t work or did you want it to work?
This whole interview is a reporter bringing the fact check to a liar who doesn’t live in a world in which fact checks matter. You’re doing it for press pickup (“GOP congressman slammed!”) and not holding him accountable at all. Accountability is BANNING the liars from lying MORE
Every day that we perpetuate this fallacy of “republicans have concerns about voter fraud” by interviewing them about fucking voter fraud, which does not fucking exist, you create a new reality in which maybe there is something to the argument that the earth is flat
We are climbing up an infinite wall because the media operates with false parameters. If one crazy congressman says voter fraud stole the election, news outlets would ignore him because it’s crazy. But if all republicans say it, the media rushes to book them. It’s no longer crazy
The newsworthiness of the lie has nothing to do with the substance of the lie, only how many people are telling the lie. They made this up out of thin air, stuck together with an amazing message (“stop the steal”), and now get to talk about it in the media whenever they want
The disgusting lesson this teaches lying insurrectionists like madison cawthorn is not just that they don’t have to stop lying—it’s that they should *keep* lying, about anything they want, because it will make it *more* likely they’ll get invited on a major platform to spread it

Senators Mike Rounds and Rand Paul pushed the Big Lie about voter fraud to overturn the election

Today they were on @MeetThePress and @ThisWeekABC to lie again, calling for voter fraud (which doesn't exist) to be investigated

These shows are helping Republicans rewrite history ImageImage
The message this sends clearly to all Republicans who lied about voter fraud is that they should continue to lie. There will never be consequences for them, and they will always be invited on top-rated platforms to push the lie without being truly challenged on it
From a good faith/bad faith standpoint, there is simply no reason to trust these people. They lied about the most integral topic imaginable — "the election was fake." The obvious logical conclusion is that they will lie about all topics. There is no reason to ask them anything

It’s not unreasonable to assume all statements coming from congressional Republicans who attempted the coup (Hawley, Cruz, McCarthy, the other 220) are obviously more misinformation and should be covered the way you wish you’d covered the “Big Lie” instead of just reprinting them
It’s very easy to do this: “GOP Leader McCarthy tried to overturn the election by lying about voter fraud. After spreading antisemitic misinformation leading up the Jan. 6 white supremacist attack, today he made another false claim about his role in inciting the insurrection.”
They’re lying to you because they know you’ll reprint the lie as “news.” You wouldn’t cover North Korea by saying “North Korea’s leader said today that he has personally discovered the cure for covid-19” so why cover McCarthy et al. like that? Because you’re friends with them?

Are we not doing "THUNE, who helped spread the GOP's lies about voter fraud by not acknowledging Biden as president-elect for five weeks after he won, casts doubt on Yellen confirmation vote today" because we want to help them erase their Big Lie history or because of laziness?
It all fits in one tweet, pretty easy to provide this essential context

Thune was part of the big lie, which at the very least should give context to your readers that the assumption for everything he says is that he's lying. The burden should be on him to return to good faith
Look how easy this is. “Graham, who spread the GOP’s lies about voter fraud that led to the Jan. 6 attack:”

It’s like 15 words. You guys are writers, right?

Remember: the Big Lie started as one of the GOP’s Regular Lies (“voter fraud”)

It got Big as news outlets let Republicans spread it for years

You must assume the Big Liars will lie about all Regular Lies. To stop those lies from becoming Big, you must ban the Big Liars. Now.
Republicans push countless Regular Lies — climate change is a hoax, Biden is corrupt in Ukraine, guns don’t kill people, tax cuts for the rich help everyone, etc.

The news media has a misplaced sense of tolerance for these lies only because they’re not Big... yet
In an ideal world journalists would own up to their role in allowing the Big Liars to use their platforms. They won’t do that

In a more practical world maybe journalists can be convinced not to air or print the words of Liars knowing it can lead to such ultimate carnage

Oh my god Politico let @chucktodd write Playbook and he is using it to lie about his role in platforming election deniers before the Capitol attack
The amount of bricks you have to have for brains to talk about people who won’t “reconcile their role” in spreading misinformation after you praised Republicans for having the “guts” to lie on your own show about voter fraud is probably 5 to 10
In December 2019 Ted Cruz CALLED CHUCK TODD to BOOK HIMSELF on Meet the Press SO HE COULD LIE ABOUT A UKRAINE CONSPIRACY THEORY, this is just a puddle of crocodile tears from another bad-faith “leading voice” using the pages of Politico Playbook to lie and deceive readers
