A second point brought up in the @AstrologyCast episode were the implications between the causes/signs debate on how astrology works. In brief, if astral configurations were the actual causes of events, it would be possible to exploit or manipulate them to achieve one's goals...
On the other hand, if astrology functioned as a mere significator of events that were already going to happen (i.e. no more a cause of events than a windsock is the cause of the wind's direction), then one cannot manipulate astrology in the same way...
... the knowledge gained from astrology would be no different from general foreknowledge of an event.
It in turn follows, that planetary magic (i.e. using astral configurations to create magical objects like talismans) only works in a paradigm where astrology is a cause of events, rather than an indication.
In the later part of that episode, Brennan mentions how the collapse of the ptolemaic cosmos brought astrology down with it in Europe. I would agree with this; adding that the scientific revolution gave Europe a worldview that had no space for astrology...
One of the first things that made me interested in astrology was how *different* it was to modern thinking; broadly speaking, it was an idea that everything was co-related in some way-- eg: Garlics, Iron, soldiers and aggression were all linked (by being under Mars)
