Pandit Ram Prasad was born in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur to Murlidhar and Moolmati. He developed an inclination towards Arya Samaj at an early age and started writing patriotic verses in Hindi using pen names such as Bismil, Ram and Agyat.(1)
The idea of revolution took roots in his mind when he read about the death sentence awarded to Bhai Parmanand, an Arya Samaj missionary. He was just 18 then and vented his anguish through his poem ‘Mera Janm’.(2)
He actively participated in the Mainpuri conspiracy in 1918. Genda Lal Dixit, a teacher from Auraiya district, joined Bismil in his efforts to mobilise youth from Etawah, Mainpuri, Agra and Shahjahanpur and make them join their organizations 'Matrivedi’ and ‘Shivaji Samiti’.(3)
He also published a pamphlet named ‘Deshwasiyon ke Naam’, which also included his poem ‘Mainpuri ki Pratigya’.(4)
He believed that freedom cannot be achieved without armed struggle which meant his views were in stark contrast to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of ‘ahimsa’.(5)
Due to this, members of the Congress party gradually grew averse to him. He formed the Hindustan Republic Association with Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad.(6)
In 1925, Bismil and his companions decided to loot a train in Kakori near Lucknow. They were successful in their attempt but were arrested alongside a dozen other HRA members within a month of the attack.(7)
The trial in the Kakori conspiracy case sentenced him and 3 other revolutionaries to be executed. While lodged in jail, he penned his autobiography 'Kakori Ke Shaheed".(8)
Moolmati supported her son throughout his struggle with other revolutionaries.(9)
On meeting Bismil before his sentence at Gorakhpur jail, she was firm and told him that she was proud to have a son like him.Ram Prasad broke down on seeing his mother who was unmoved.(10)
He told his mother that his tears were not for his upcoming execution but that he would never get to see her again.(11)
Moolmati in a public gathering, after Ram Prasad's martyrdom raised her other son's hand and offered him to the freedom movement.(12)

Valour, loyalty and sacrifice!
Baji Prabhu Deshpande was one of the most able lieutenants of Shivaji. He sacrificed his life defending Shivaji in a heroic last stand known as the "Battle of Pavan Khind" in which his force was hugely outnumbered.(1)
In this battle he became a martyr, but managed to halt the enemy forces for several hours, which secured Shivaji’s safety and victory on another front. Without this heroic last stand Shivaji’s glorious career may have been cut short.(2)
