Here's a true story ... about public education in #NewMexico

School started in #LosAlamos on August 13th, 2020. We knew it would be a weird start, but held out hope that the kids would be back at school in a timely manner. #backtoschoolnmm #covid19

2/ Kids were supposed to return Sept 21st, but the school board delayed the start of hybrid to Oct 19th. Something about "not being ready" .. what were you doing all summer? I withdrew my younger kid, b/c remote school almost destroyed him. Left my older kid enrolled.

3/ My kid went exactly 5 days before the school board voted to go back to remote till Jan 19th 2021. Last week we had snow, so no in person school. Today he went back for TWO hours only, in the PM, after all of the academic work. So basically for study hall. #backtoschoolnm

4/ While at school his SpEd teacher brought his independent work for the rest of the school year. See the picture: #backtoschoolnm #covid19

5/ It's mostly busy work, and does not address the goals in his IEP. He also will not be meeting with his SpEd teacher at all during the 4 hours he is at school every week. #backtoschoolnm #covid19

6/ We've been told by our school dist, & @NMPED that Special Ed kids would be given the help they needed. THEY ARE NOT GETTING WHAT THEY NEED with packets of busy work. #backtoschoolnm #covid19

7/ I don't blame the teacher. She is doing the best she can under the circumstances. She's always been willing to talk, email, reach out, even sent my kids handwritten letters all summer to encourage them. #backtoschoolnm #covid19

8/ I blame the failure of @GovMLG @NMPED & @NMDOH and their disastrous #covid19 response. Keeping schools closed, keeping us masked up, and leaving 1000s of #NewMexico families to figure it out on their own, is doing more damage than #covid19 ever did.

9/ My kids are going to make it, because I'm a teacher, but also because I'm stubborn and willing to supplement and homeschool. Many #NewMexico families are not this fortunate. Everyday I read posts by frustrated parents whose kids are on the edge, who want to take their lives...

10/ I see people w/o options, or resources. If we could recall @GovMLG I'd be leading that effort. The @NMDEMS & MLG have failed this state re: #covid19. Time to admit your failure, open up the econ, stop fearmongering, set us free so we can heal ourselves. The End.
