Link to the The Community Police Advisory Committee (CPAC) Meeting

us02web.zoom.us/j/89821009801?…
Passcode: 278618
It was supposed to start at 6, but the street racing meeting went over.
The committee is introducing themselves now.
Public comment isn't allowed....
The chief left his powerpoint? 😂
He put his car in reverse, for whatever reason.
How many times has Ake practiced his story?
The information he has isn't complete, yet he keeps saying what happened....from the police officer's point of view.
The incident was traumatic for all parties involved?
Okay, Kiara. Thank you for talking about community trauma, and centering THE PEOPLE.
ACCOUNTABILITY! Finally.
Okay, Kiara. Read them.
I WILL MAKE IT MY BUSINESS!
Kiara calls on the chief for accountability, and what the plan is going forward. And he responds with "I need to get a better understanding of the community".
People are going to die! (Her question is if training is still his answer to police accountability).
BOOOOO, GET HIM OFF THE ZOOM MEETING.
How does it become a whole community effort when we can't comment at meetings like this? Remember "Project Peace" when we weren't allowed to say anything negative about the police?
Terah is talking about how scary it was to see the videos.
Jennifer says as a person of color it's frustrating to be told we have to wait. We feel a real sense of urgency.
Dana tells chief Ake, you got thrown into the fire, but this is what you signed up for.
Dana says she wants to see action now, and not have to wait for another long investigation. (Referencing the Manuel Ellis case).
This committee originally requested to be an oversight committee and was denied.
Shayna is reminding people why it's a use of force case. Since some people seem to be confused 🙃
Also mentions that back up was called...and he still plowed through the crowd.
Shayna talks about the issue of police not having to turn their body worn cameras on right away
Louis says we shouldn't be operating out of fear, but as a Black man he is in fear every day of his life.
LOUIS SPEAKING FACTS.
He's talking about how officers can say I feared for my life and be automatically vindicated. And how has a Black man, that's his biggest fear.
Louis asks why wasn't backup called before he went into the crowd.
Stephen is talking about protestors? And we're confused.
Did he just tell us to take a few deep breaths?
Stephen says if everyone complied with the law, we wouldn't be here. and it's a community thing to fix.
Why is he on this committee?
He's the chair of the committee...
Krystle is saying she wants to see action items taken care of by the next meeting.
Kiara says it's unacceptable that there's no communication to the community about how to access body worn camera footage.
Apparently the public records request process for body worn camera is on the page. (Not sure what page).
Side note, Jeffery "don't paint my fence that I don't own" Sargent being on this committee is comical.
Almost forgot Ake was on the call 🥴
Jeffery is surprised there's no dash cams...welcome to Tacoma.
Stephen is responding to THREE emails per day?
Here's the link to the page about body cameras.

Meeting is over. Their next regular meeting is Feb 8th.

👋🏾 a lot of new people here. So here's a few things to know about us: (y'all know we love threads)
We love Black people more than we hate white supremacy.
When we started organizing under this name in 2015, it was because received death threats as individuals. Tacoma didn't have a big protest scene, and it was hella easy for people to make us targets. As Black women, we needed to protest ourselves.

😂 not y'all saying people over property yesterday and then being mad at some broken windows today.
No, we didn't go to the protest for safety reasons, but we're also not losing sleep over some windows. They can pay for it with that increased police budget.
This is the same city that didn't blink an eye about Manuel Ellis. Have barely said anything about a cop running people over with his car, and wanted to cut money from the libraries and increase the police budget.

Last night TPD arrested and charged two known organizers, @DailyTacoma and our own @ohdamn_jam.
So many people acted quickly, and we were able to make sure they both made bail.
You can read @ohdamn_jam's account of what happened here

Manuel Ellis was killed in Tacoma, WA on March 3rd 2020. Today Is July 27th. On June 2nd it was clear that this case was being both covered up and neglected. (A thread)
The four officers who killed Manuel Ellis were placed on leave, and were allowed to return to work, even though an investigation hadn't been completed. They still haven't been fired.
The Tacoma City Manager has the power to fire them, and won't. With the exception of Mayor Woodards, Deputy Mayor Keith Blocker, and Council Member Catherine Ushka, the Council has been silent. They haven't put forward a motion to fire the officers.
