This sentiment is un-American

Free speech is more than the First Amendment
"The guarantee of free speech is for democracy; it is worth little, in the end, apart from it."

Completely backwards, @emilybazelon

Our rights do not exist to protect our system of government; our system of government exists to protect our rights
I would sooner live in a monarchy with freedom of speech, religion, press, et al

Than live in a democracy without those freedoms

Democracy is a means, liberty and prosperity are the ends

And the most important liberty of all is the freedom to speak your mind
Imagine saying that "the guarantee of freedom of religion is for democracy: it is worth little, in the end, apart from it."

Or put any other freedom you might in there

The problem is obvious

Listening to the National Guard briefing now

There are still 13,000 National Guard members in DC, conducting "security missions" according to the brass
This is decreasing down to "only" 7,000 by the end of this week
Press is asking about how many Guardsmen had COVID

No questions yet about why on earth they were all stuck in a parking garage with access to only a single bathroom

Al Qaeda flew planes into the Twin Towers and killed 3,000 Americans you absolute child
A single police officer dying is a tragedy

It is not the same as flying passenger jets into skyscrapers
After 9/11 Al Qaeda didn’t do much except maim thousands of American soldiers with IEDs and slaughter Shia civilians in Iraq

Totally not dangerous at all, the real threat is Josh Hawley because reasons

This is tragically funny, but there's a broader point here

People who call this an insurrection aren't paying attention, the perpetrators are simply handing evidence of their crimes over to the FBI out of public-spiritedness!
Antifa: "Journalists aren't allowed at our events, they lead to our members being arrested."

StopTheStealers: "Hi there nice FBI lady, why yes, I'd be perfectly happy to give you my video of our riot!"
Also, ffs, if you attended the #StopTheSteal protest and the FBI comes knocking DO NOT SPEAK TO THEM WITHOUT A LAWYER PRESENT no matter how "nice" they are being

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Trump is just not right about Pence's legal authority

He can't just send envelopes back
More robust explanation here:

And I did a thorough explanation of the law here:

We're in the middle of a global pandemic!
"Broad-based emergency aid in the face of a massively disruptive contagious disease is really just instant gratification"
You know when it's rational to take one marshmallow today instead of two in a week?

When you're starving

So this #PenceCard nonsense looks like it was started by @Raiklin with this tweet

The argument seems to be that Pence could have decided that electors from certain states were "impermissible" because he "is the sole plenary power" to determine that

Further, the argument goes, that under his authority to demand that states send him a list of electors if they have failed to do so, Pence could reject the list of electors as "impermissible" and demand that they send him a correct list
The only statutory authority cited by Raiklin is 3 USC 12

All it does is give Pence the authority to demand a state send him a certificate of electoral votes if they have not done so
