Today at 1:30 @MCHDPIO is presenting to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors its strategy for implementing CA's Covid-19 vaccination plan. I read through the document this morning. Here's my take. 1/
When I heard last night we would hear a presentation on vaccinations, I thought it would be more detailed, as in specific names of sites, organizations and individuals that would be involved. It turns out this is in fact a "strategy," and not a specific plan.2/
It is detailed but it's more of a playbook for the people who are/will be involved. It's what I would have liked to have seen in December before the first vaccines arrived in the county. We learn the county's vaccine planning workgroup convened in Nov. 3/
The most interesting page to me is Appendix G which lays out what could happen based on number of doses arriving in Monterey County. Under 3K, medical providers and small points of distribution (PODs). Each step up in numbers increases PODs and other methods and locations.4/
If the county started receiving more than 10K doses per week we'd see "mass vaccination events." BTW, pharmacies don't come into play until 6,100-10K doses per week. Currently we're getting between 2K-4K.5/
It will be interesting to see what happens as @POTUS plan unfolds, which could include federal vaccination centers. I could see Salinas being chosen as a possible location. And maybe a hub for proposed mobile units to reach rural areas.6/
The other thing to watch for in today's board meeting is the presentation by the Ag industry for vaccinating field and pressing workers.7/
BTW: Page 2 of strategy shows projected need: 20K health care workers; 79,369 correctional workers; 90,842 essential workers as in education, Ag, food; 47,811 people age 65-74; 38,660, 75+. That's 276,682. County reports 434,061 residents. Herd immunity is 80%. That's 347K.

I was honored to spend time on the phone with Sigrid Stokes, a Pacific Grove nurse in her 70s who is working the frontlines vaccinating people against Covid-19. Sigrid's mother volunteered during the Spanish flu pandemic. read the story! mailchi.mp/mcweekly/2021-…
Stokes was a journalism major before she got a nursing degree. She was careful about spelling names and wanted to make sure I was accurate. I was nervous I'd flub something but was relieved when she sent an email this morning saying she appreciated how "ACCURATE" I was. #phew
Here's the cover story I wrote about the rocky roll out of Covid-19 vaccines for Thursday's paper. That''s Sigrid below. montereycountyweekly.com/news/cover_col…
