At least one part of the EU has finally realised it's impossible to work with the abusive regime in Hungary...
You can't cooperate with a member state where rule of law has no meaning. nyti.ms/3r0XvP4
Remember, the Hungarian ruling party's hate-driven lawlessness that forced Frontex to make this decision has been supported for years by the European People's Party.
The @EPP/@EPPGroup helped their partner Fidesz as it created a dictatorship in Hungary.
The EU is no longer a club of exclusively democracies.
And the creation of the dictatorship in Hungary has been supported by the European People's Party, @EPP/@EPPGroup, ally of Hungary's ruling party Fidesz for years.
The EU stood by as a dictatorship emerged in Hungary in large part because the EU's largest political group, the European People's Party - including leaders like @JunckerEU@vonderleyen@ManfredWeber@donaldtuskEPP & Merkel - backed their Hungarian ally Fidesz.
The Hungarian ruling party, Fidesz, has led a full-on assault against independent media to undermine critics & those who would expose their corruption.
Supported by the European People's Party, @EPP/@EPPGroup.
Throughout it all - with every step that the Hungarian ruling party has destroyed democracy and brought dictatorship to the heart of the EU - the European People's Party @EPP/@EPPGroup has stood by it, refusing to #ExpelFidesz from the party group.
The @EPP president, @donaldtuskEPP, has even said an infamous Nazi legal expert would be “proud” of Orbán.
Yet he absurdly remains head of the European People's Party despite Fidesz’s membership.
The European People's Party @EPP/@EPPGroup simply has no principles - unless your consider support for the destruction of democracy in the EU a principle.
Recall also the new Nations in Transit 2020 democracy index from @FH_NIT a few weeks ago...
Hungary became the first country to "leave the group of democracies entirely".
@EPP/@EPPGroup backed Hungary's ruling party Fidesz as it destroyed democracy.
The new @anticorruption index is out, showing Hungary one of the top decliners in recent years. Corruption and the destruction of rule of law go hand-in-hand, of course.
Hungary's ruling party & its corruption backed by the @EPP/@EPPGroup for years...
After going through over 500 CVs over the last few days, I thought I might share some observations for those seeking an entry-level position at an international NGO like @hrw.
Of course, what I’m about to say doesn’t apply for all job openings everywhere. But for entry-level posts at a fairly big NGO, I think these thoughts will hold.
The main takeaway is that some people sell themselves on their CVs much better than others, even when they have the same or similar qualifications as others.
People frustrated with the negative sides of Twitter sometimes ask me what they can do about it. Here's a thread with some ideas.
Whether you have 100 followers or a million, you can do something to help… 📢
1) Don't share the ugly stuff, not even to expose its ugliness, if it’s just powerless fools looking for attention. (If you just can’t help yourself, use a screenshot, never a link or RT.)
Do expose the ugly stuff from elected officials and others with power. Frame your tweets to be clear you are calling it out. And use a screenshot, not a link or RT, so you don’t send them any clicks of encouragement.
And I say that as someone who was very pleased to see her actions in 2015, when she fought for allowing some 1 million desperate refugees into Germany.
And yes, I also realise that both of those actions - supporting Hungary's extremist dictatorship and welcoming refugees - may possibly stem from the same exact political leaning: the urge to meet the demands of German businesses for cheap labour.
"It is not enough for Joe Biden to just undo what Donald Trump did. He should prioritize human rights so that whoever comes after him cannot destroy everything." - @KenRoth to Michał Kokot for @gazeta_wyborcza.
