One of the most active and engaged Rider Advisory Council members says they’ve been pushed out the door by WMATA. As Chair of the RAC, they always begged Metro to be better — whether it was providing masks or more clearly communicating service changes during the pandemic.
Metro is set to vote on appointing new members of the RAC at 9 a.m. They’ve nominated:
- Madison O’Conner of Virginia
- Brian Meyer of Virginia
- Charmaine Todman-Nwanji of Maryland
- Andrew Tsui, at-large
- 2 other members reappointed
- Unclear why @anelki not reappointed
In Kierig's last RAC report video, they chided Metro for continuing to charge peak fares when Metro is not running peak level service.
Smedberg reminds riders that the public comment period for the FY22 budget opens Feb. 20.
Metro says it expects widespread access to the vaccine for its workforce in February.
D.C. (and probably other jurisdictions) have prioritized transit workers in earlier groups.
VA member Matt Letourneau asks about mask compliance on trains, buses. Metro continues to get complaints that ppl aren't wearing them.
Wiedefeld reiterates his position he's held all along: they won't make operators be the enforcers on masks. Can call transit police for help.
Says these issues can elevate into something more confrontational and Wiedefeld wants to avoid that.
"We do not want to put our frontline employees in that position."
There's just a certain segment that does not abide by the rules.
And that wraps today's unusually short Metro board
Smedberg forwarded my request for comment to WMATA PR shop.
Here's a long response a Metro spox gave after I asked about how the board decided to not re-appoint Kierig.
In an email rejection to Kierig, Smedberg said "We have decided to nominate other Virginia candidates... (that) more closely meet our needs at this time. This was a difficult decision but one we feel reflects the Board's desired direction for the RAC..."

Oof. Looking back at this quote from when WMSC released its report in Sept: Mayer said he has confidence that Metro leadership understands what needs to be done to fix the issues.
“The WMSC will pay very close attention... to ensure that the problems get addressed adequately."
Agenda: Will they or won't they send out a ravaged service plan/budget out for public comment or wait for Congressional aid? Also a Silver Line update: wmata.com/about/board/me…
Breaking: #WMATA is proposing some of the grimmest cuts in its 50-year history. If approved, service cutbacks starting July 2021 include:
- No weekend train service
- Trains every 30 mins on each line
- Close 19 stations
- Close at 9 p.m. instead of 11 dcist.com/story/20/11/30…
- Bring back turnbacks on Yellow, Red Lines; Silver Line service only from Ashburn to Ballston
- Cut bus routes from 60 lines to 41
- Eliminating ANOTHER 2,400 positions on top of the already-approved 1,400 buyouts/layoffs. (1/3 of workforce total)
WMSC says this happened while the person responsible for vehicle movement in the yard was watching a movie trailer. That's a big violation of WMATA's no electronics policy.
Here are the movie trailers that came out that week:
Spiral
The Jesus Rolls
Guns Akimbo
Fast and Furious 9
Minions: The Rise of Gru
Mulan
The Kindness of Strangers
Impractical Jokers: The Movie
No Time To Die
Black Widow
Top Gun: Maverick
What if the Minions trailer contributed to this crash?
An MDOT spox told DCist that while they dispute PLTP’s “right to terminate” because of an extended delay, MDOT and the Maryland Transit Administration “will work with PLTP on an orderly transition.”
MDOT and MTA remain committed to completing the project.
From 2016: "We’re very pleased with this contract,” Rahn said. “The companies involved are all experienced — they’re generally the largest within their fields. We’re confident we have [a team] committed to delivering this project.”
Big shoutouts to @jennygathright, @WhyBlitz and @nateclaydiller for picking up some complicated transportation stories for me yesterday/today amid the chaos. Love journalists who can do it all.
