The @JoeBiden imperative: rebuild American democracy after unprecedented attacks & counter the global tide of authoritarianism & kleptocracy! My thoughts on how @POTUS can leverage @opengovpart to renew democracy at home & abroad! bit.ly/biden-imperati…
1) @POTUS can use its 4th OGP action plan to implement ambitious reforms proposed by U.S. civil society to combat corruption, protect civil rights & tackle disinformation. Abroad, it can support similar reforms across 100+ OGP action plans globally thru U.S. agencies & missions.
2) With the U.S. as a major destination for stolen & laundered money, @POTUS must enact regulation to limit shell companies & advance this global norm. To address gaps in post-Watergate reforms, it must restore trust thru ethics reform & asset disclosure. #OpenGov
3) The killings of George Floyd & other black men & women exposed systemic racism & injustice. The U.S. must raise the visibility of audits on violations of civil rights & racial biases in the justice system domestically, and support access to justice for the vulnerable globally
4) The January 6 violent insurrection viscerally epitomizes the deep polarization tearing American democracy apart. The solutions must include combating foreign influence in elections, tackling disinformation, & holding media platforms accountable, while protecting free speech.
5) @JoeBiden's proposed “Summit for Democracy” can spotlight the imperative for democracy renewal at home & abroad. Along with the G7, G20, and the @opengovpart 10th Anniversary Summit, this can help forge a coalition to reinvigorate democracy and counter authoritarianism.
6) Democracy reform can underpin all of @JoeBiden's priorities. He must invest commensurate political capital, establishing a @WhiteHouse Office for Democracy, housing OGP in the White House for interagency coordination, and having the U.S. rejoin the OGP Steering Committee.
