shorter rob portman: "unity is when you abandon your preferences and concede to mine"
if Portman has a substantive problem with the Biden package he and his colleagues can propose their own and hash it out that way.
but his decision to abandon talks because he's offended by the audacity of Democrats having a preference is just pure bad faith
also if i recall correctly Portman voted for skinny ACA repeal and the tax cuts and jobs act. strange that he didn't have a problem with jamming things through then

it’s admittedly reductive but i think you can consider the republican party a subsidiary of the conservative media/entertainment/influencer complex newrepublic.com/article/161084…
and what we’re seeing now, from trump on down, are the consumers of that media claiming power within the party
majorie taylor greene, for example, is a trend-chasing conservative influencer who parlayed that into some real political power. so, for that matter, are madison cawthorn and lauren boebert

Dems had one shot to get enough Republican votes to convict and remove Trump and it was on Jan. 7. They missed their chance to blow.
don’t project whatever grievances you have on me. there was exactly one moment where republican electeds were shook enough to consider removing Trump and it was Jan 7. that the odds of success were low is all the more reason Dems should have tried.
you miss all the shots you don’t take my dude

low key some of the best jokes in this movie are the fast cuts
Nick Frost taking out his baton to chase the swans is extremely funny.

yep! the main opposition to popular election of the president had little to do with fear of “mob rule” and everything with specific political problems, #1 being “too much of the South’s population is enslaved and white southerners could never muster enough votes to elect a POTUS”
the electoral college as written in the constitution should be understood as an elaborate kludge tossed together at the last minute for the sake of just getting the whole thing done with
yes! so much of the argument about the selection of the president — and so much of the argument about the nature of the presidency — rested on the idea that Washington would be president for some indeterminate amount of time.
