Wellcome to our virtual walk from Ambleside to Howtown on Lake Ullswater. I’ve based the route on #HadriansHighWay by @fellranger1 which he uses a variant to the main route. Books can be bought direct or through @VindolandaTrust
A view of #Ambleside from Wansfell our starting point in the heart of the #LakeDistrict @CumbriaMagazine
We can start at the roman fort at the edge of #Windermere. The Romans stated to push into the lakes in the early 90’s AD, this fort dates to the rebuild in Hadrian’s Reign possibly after warfare which brought about #HadriansWall #Ambleside
The #Ambleside posting wasn’t always a peaceful one as the gravestone in the @ArmittMuseum shows one man was killed “in the fort”
Time to leave and head out of town passing this scale model of the famous Bridge House in #Ambleside #virtualwalk
Temptation straight way as we pass the Golden Rule, who remembers pubs? #Lakedistrict #VirtualWalk
We pass How Head the oldest part of visible #Ambleside with parts dating to the 16th cent and still lived in
St Anne’s Chapel in #Ambleside a rebuild of the earlier Tudor church which stood in the site #lakedistrict
There’s always time to appreciate a traditional Lakeland gateway, usually round at one end and square at the other to stop livestock from pulling them out hence a “round peg in square hole” #Ambleside #Virtualwalk
Finally we are out of the trees heading into Scandale above #Ambleside with views of Rydal Water and the Langdale Pikes
#LakeDistrict #virtualwalk
It wouldn’t be a Savin walk without stopping to admire some #Wallporn in this Lakeland barn #Scandale
We reach High Sweden ridge, a great place for a paddle and listening to the tumbling of water. Many here venture north to begin the Fairfield Horseshoe route but our way keeps to Scandale Beck #VirtualWalk #LakeDistrict
A quick interlude to show the location of Ambleside on Google Map
My walking companion tells me Scandale means “short valley” we’ll see as we climb if that’s the case #virtualwalk
Admiring the dry stone walkers art in Scandale #Ambleside #virtualwalk #Lakedistrict
Ahead we get a glimpse of Little Hart Crag at the head of Scandale
The valley opens out in front of us I try to imagine the last
remnant ice age glacier at the head of Scandale thousands of years ago #virtualwalk #LakeDistrict
Scandale Beck splits into numerous little tributaries with we ford them thankful it’s a dry week
Time for a map of the route from “Hadrian’s High Way” by @fellranger1 please DM Mark or purchase online from @VindolandaTrust
Glancing back at our route up Scandale, tree planting will assist wildlife and help flood prevention, the transformation of the valley will be profound in a few years #VirtualWalk
Through the last gate, it’s time to ascend Scandale Pass #LakeDistrict #virtualwalk @JuliaBradbury
Half way up Scandale Pass it’s definitely worth stopping for the view, a little glimpse of Windermere can been seen in the distance #LakeDistrict #Virtualwalk
As we climb the pass we can get a view of Low and High Pikes forming the start of the Fairfield Horseshoe, the classic circular day route in the #LakeDistrict
Time to cross the stile ladder at the top of the pass between Red Screes and Dove Crag, dark clouds ahead #Virtualwalk #LakeDistrict
Time for another valley as we round the corner, ridge after ridge of Eastern Lakeland fills the view #Virtualwalk #Scandale
We’ve lost the warm late summer sun but I’m sure it will reappear. We descend into Caiston Glen on a good path #VirtualWalk #LakeDistrict
Round another corner as we follow Caiston Beck downwards we spy Brothers Water and the Kirkstone pass road
Caiston Glen once rang to the sound of picks and shovels as levels were driven into the fellside looking for lead and silver. A handsome roman tree overhangs the beck it’s berries indicating a hard winter so tradition says.
Time for a flask of coffee and a break, if you’d like to offer me a coffee top up please feel free to use the
Buy me a coffee link in my bio ☕️🙏🏻👏🏻
Rowan ...- ahhhhh spell check 😡
Well that was a full flask of coffee! Thanks for the refills folks. Time to resume as we drop down towards Brothers Water under High Hartsop Dodd #virtualwalk #LakeDistrict
Nice of the @OrdnanceSurvey to label a slope for me, the name is related to juniper which grow on the hillsides
Glancing back up the trail to middle Dodd #LakeDistrict #virtualwalk
We enter a verdant swath of green full of lumps and bumps, this is #Hartsop Romano British settlement consisting of an enclosed area containing the remains of hut circles #Virtualwalk
I wonder if 2000 years ago children from the settlement climbed these boulders or glanced at the Eagles which must soared overhead #virtualwalk #Hartsop
From the settlement you get a view of the priests cave high up Dove Crag, it’s not for the faint hearted reaching it along a narrow footpath #Virtualwalk #LakeDistrict
Onwards past Hartsop Hall and views of Brothers Water and Angletarn Pikes, the lake was said to be named after two unfortunate men who went wild swimming before it was trendy #Virtualwalk
The fell of Hartsop Dodd and below the much reduced hamlet of Hartsop at the bottom of the Kirkstone Pass, we need take care crossing the road of this popular summer road.
Ahead above the village of #Patterdale is our route over Boredale Hause #Virtualwalk
It’s a pleasant stroll along the clear waters of Goldrill Beck before the climb starts again, Place Fell ahead marks the route #Patterdale #Virtualwalk #LakeDistrict
How’s everyone doing? Hopefully no virtual blisters?
Another climb but there’s always time to look back on our route and Brothers Water as light plays across the valley floor
The Kirkstone Pass illuminated between the rolling clouds overhead #LakeDistrict #ClassicDrive
Great views of Ullswater now as we slowly climb Boredale Hause #Virtualwalk
The long ridge of Striding Edge leading up to #Helvellyn and the pointed summit of Catstye Cam on the right is visible as we climb #LakeDistrict #Virtualwalk
We can take in the view of Sheffield Pike and the Greenside lead mine now a Youth Hostel and bothy #Ullswater #Glenridding
Here is map 2 of the route and my thanks goes to @fellranger1
At Chapel in the Hause we get a view down Boredale and Hallin fell, next stop Bedafell Knott
As we climb Bedafell Knott we get great views of Hallin Fell and Ullswater #lakeDistrict #Virtualwalk
Time to enjoy the late afternoon sun overlooking The Nab and the High Street range on Bedafell #lakeDistrict
Time for one last photo on the felltop before we make the most of the light as the evening draws in #Bedafell
The golden hour for Photography, a view over the High Street range #LakeDistrict
We descend into Howe Grain and watch the deer under the Nab #Ullswater #Virtualwalk
Looking back down Howe Grain as we reach the valley floor at Dale Head
Dale Head barn greets us at the road end, our first building since Hartsop hall #Virtualwalk
Our aching legs now take to the road on our (almost) final stretch, the evening light is putting on a good show, next stop Martindale
We reach the beautiful St Martins church dating back to the 13th cent it’s ancient yew tree hints at earlier origins #Martindale #Virtualwalk
We climb briefly up to Lanty Tarn past Cotehow
A short climb takes us up to Lanty Tarn, those expecting a sweeping waterscape and a sunset over the water may be disappointed but it has its own small charms, we are within sight of our gaol
So there we are, below sits Howtown Hotel and tea room and in the distance the little peak of Dunmallard Hillfort at the northern end of Ullswater, as it’s a virtual walk the beers are waiting...
Our last @fellranger1 map of the route
Well I hope you enjoyed our virtual walk through the Lakeland hills, thanks very much for you company and coffees to keep the virtual flask topped up.
