Happy Black History Month!

Day 1:
I started the day by explaining to my kindergarteners the history of BHM and why we celebrate. We also talked about Ruby Bridges and how her impact is felt today in our diverse classroom and at our school.
Day 2:
We talked about the Greensboro sit-ins. This also led to a discussion about protests and why people protest. I like to highlight the sit-ins during BHM because those involved were incredibly brave!

See what they had to endure here:
Day 3:
Talking about events in Black history can be heavy but it’s still important to learn. Not all BH is sad though and today’s lesson was inspired by watching my kids dance! We talked about DJ Kool Herc, the history of breakdancing and I read the story The Story of Rap. ImageImage
Day 4:
We talked about Mae Jemison and read a story about her childhood. In the book, Mae’s teacher told her she couldn’t be an astronaut. I talked to my students about not being afraid to dream big! I also told them how important it is to see representation of themselves. ImageImage
Day 5:
We had a virtual grandparents and special friends day so no BHM lesson for the kids. But today I’m reflecting on all the Black grandparents I’ve met today. Thinking about all they’ve seen and been through and yet, they are still here. Not all of our Black elders made it ✊🏾
Day 6:
I’ve been listening to the @DiasporaUtdPod podcast today. They focus on Black women in soccer! Check it out, the first two episodes are also recaps of the 2 uswnt games vs. Colombia.

Day 7:
Tried out a new Black owned restaurant today! Atlanta people, hit up Soul Food and Culture at Krog St. I don’t have any pictures because I ate everything too fast 😂

Check it out: soulfoodandculture.com
Day 8:
Day after the super bowl so perfect time to talk about Colin Kaepernick. I also told my class about Jennifer King. King is the first Black woman to be an assistant coach in the nfl. One of my students eyes lit up when I showed King. This is why representation matters! ImageImage
Day 9:
After talking about football yesterday, I decided to keep the sports theme rolling. Today we talked about Jackie Robinson. The 2nd pic is from a video for kids I did NOT play in class. This also came up after mentioning how a lot people didn’t want him in the MLB. ImageImage
So basically, white people didn’t want him there and went as far as threatening to kill him but thank goodness Jackie Robinson never lost his temper or fought back 😡
Day 10:
Great day to talk about the WNBA! I could spend DAYS highlighting all the Black women past and present of the W, but today I highlighted A’ja Wilson. I wore her jersey and told my class about her statue! Also talked about the Dream and the W’s impact on the senate runoff. ImageImageImageImage
Day 11:
Today we talked about Serena Williams and Althea Gibson. First we talked about Williams and some of her many achievements. Then we read a bio about Gibson and I explained how she helped pave the way for athletes like Serena. If you don’t know Gibson’s story, look it up! ImageImageImageImage
Day 12:
Already been talking about FloJo so here’s some extra shine. Yes, the fits were dope, the nails were poppin, but don’t get it twisted...FloJo did her thing on the track. Look good, play good is always the motto. Watch her smoke the competition 👇🏾

Day 13:
Repost from @RaquelWillis_!

My Black people, please take some time to do something for yourself! Many of us spend so much time working hard, caring for others, fighting for others. Don’t forget to take care of yourselves! Rest and self-care for me all weekend 💅🏾 Image
Day 14:
Self care is hard for me because I’m still unlearning rest and laziness and I never wanna be perceived as lazy. But today I think I’m actually practicing self care and I gotta share! Cbd bubble bath, glass(es) of wine and my r&b playlist 💅🏾

Day 15:
Self love! My journey to self love hasn’t been easy. Growing up in predominantly white spaces, it was easier to fit in than be myself. Feeling like I had to dress like other girls, that included my hair. Now I rock the natural hair and wear what I want 💁🏾‍♀️ ImageImageImageImage
Day 16:
Back to BHM lessons for the kids! I wanted to finish my Black athletes spotlight by talking about the face of US soccer 😏 The kids got to hear me gush about Crystal Dunn. I also talked about Briana Scurry and how influential she was for me growing up playing soccer. ImageImageImageImage
Day 17:
Today we talked about Valerie Thomas. This little blurb about her is a pretty good bio but you should still go look her up.

Ps sis is killin the fro 🔥 Image
Day 18:
Today we talked about another inventor! Lonnie Johnson invented the super soaker, a water gun I begged my parents to buy me for most of my childhood. My kids didn’t understand what all the hype was about so I showed them an old 90s commercial and they lost it 😂 ImageImageImage
Day 19:
Today we watched a video about George Washington Carver. It’s not always easy finding good, educational videos for kids about Black history that‘s not whitewashed. I thought this one was good and wanted to share, especially with educators! 🥜 🌱

Day 20:
Brunch with my family! Nothing better than spending time with my fam while eating good 🤤

I am once again advertising Soul Food and Culture for my ATL people. Today they did a pop-up menu with Bomb Biscuits ATL.

Ps Bomb Biscuits ships 👀 bombbiscuitatl.com ImageImageImage
Day 21:
Self care reminder!
I’ve been looking ahead to the my school schedule for the rest of February and March. No breaks until spring break in April. Good to start reminding myself to be gentle with myself and take breaks. And ask for help! That’s one I struggle with.
Day 22:
Last week of BHM so we’re focusing on local BH. Today we talked about John Lewis. I talked about how he was a lifelong activist that fought for civil rights. Lewis dedicated his life to helping others. Yesterday would’ve been his 81st birthday. #GoodTrouble ImageImage
Day 23:
Today I talked about Stacey Abrams and LaTosha Brown. I told my class about how Abrams used her “defeat” in the gov’s election to fight back against voter suppression. Both Abrams and Brown were just a few important organizations that helped GA have record voter turnout! ImageImage
Sorry for the typo 🤦🏾‍♀️
Important organizers*
But they also have important organizations! Check them out @fairfightaction @BlackVotersMtr
Day 24:
Today we talked about Maynard Jackson, the 1st Black mayor of Atlanta. Elected in ‘73, he was also the first Black mayor of a major city in the south. I explained to my kids that this really wasn’t that long ago and why progress in the south (the US) is taking so long... Image
Day 25:
Today I talked about HBCUs and why they were needed in the first place. So many important figures in Black history had to fight just to get an education. Read that sentence again. I then spent some time highlighting 2 local HBCUs, Morehouse and Spelman. ImageImage
Day 26:
I will talk about what my class discussed for our last BH lesson tomorrow because today is all about Renee Montgomery! Honestly some of the best news I’ve heard in awhile. I’M PUMPED 😝
Day 27:
Yesterday, my class watched a video about MLK and then I set aside some time to have a discussion about any feelings, questions or thoughts they had. It wasn’t an easy conversation but I thought it was a good one and definitely necessary!

Day 28:
Today is the last day of BHM but it shouldn’t be the last day that you acknowledge Black history for the year. BH is everybody’s history and should be celebrated every day, not just in February! Ps it’s never too early to start celebrating the BH being made today! ✊🏾
