Hey INTERNATIONAL Tweeps. #Australian Mining companies are buying the East Slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains for cheap to do open-pit, mountain top removal mining of metallurgical coal. Check out & support this facebook group facebook.com/groups/alberta… And #MakeSomeNoise
The proposed areas were sneakily removed from protection by our own provincial government. Not only will it permanently scar & destroy the landscapes, this type of mining is a significant threat to both water quality and water quantity in a dry zone.
Albertans are outraged but even more helpful is if the international communities who pay good tourist dollars to visit these gorgeous areas join us in protest of these developments.
These are the key environmental issues for the region.
Selenium levels are known to be an issue in this type of geological area. Waste rock will sit for decades, eroding & leaching contaminants into surface & groundwater. Local mine devs in BC have FAILED to contain selenium contamination.
Even more distressing is our own government found the same company's work mining coal near Jasper National Park has created unsafe selenium levels in AB rivers - but have discontinued water monitoring - despite the fact that selenium levels remain unacceptable even today!
It is also unclear why the AB government isn't making a bigger deal out of supporting hydrogen-based energy production - which is a viable option for steel-making but would also make good use of current AB resources.
