I lived and breathed #misinformation in 2020 and I shared 3 ideas with @Poynter about what can be done to make things better: poynter.org/commentary/202…
1. Platforms need to step up and review their policies now that we can see the real-world harm that’s growing out of #misinfo. @Twitter and @YouTube especially need more transparency.
2. The federal government needs more content-neutral regulation around Section 230 to discourage misinformation. We can curtail lies without harming free speech.
3. Because misinformers don’t have facts, they resort to online threats and harassment. We need new remedies from government and tech companies to stop cyber-stalking and harassment.
Misinfo is a society-wide problem and it needs society-wide solutions. Fact-checkers are an important part of fighting misinfo, but we can’t do it alone. poynter.org/commentary/202…
